Sorry but I can't remember for sure. Which B&W gear ratio was noted by three grooves on the input shaft? I seem to think that it was those with close ratio. Thanks, Mike

Re: Grooves on Tranny Input Shaft
Well...my charts show a T10 with 3 grooves is a '64-'65 wide ratio(2:20 1st), 10 spline input.
It also shows a 3 groove T10 for '74-'95, close ratio(2:43 1st), 26 spline input,
and also a Super T10, 3 groove, close ratio(2:63 1st)...
Grooves on the input shaft really can't be used to positively ID the trans, unless you know for a fact the trans has never been repaired. Most replacement, and aftermarket input shafts don't have any ID grooves...

Re: Grooves on Tranny Input Shaft
I've already performed on the bench what Clem suggested.
It is easy to do: Simply mark a spline on the input and output drives and count the number of turns two revolutions (more accurate) on the input yields on the output. Some estimation is required for example in first gear, 2 turns in yielded approximatly 15/16 turns out (there are 16 splines) which equates to roughly 2.13 or more precisely the 2.20 published ratio of the close ratio gear set (compared to 2.54 of the wide ratio set). Performing the same analysis on second and third gears further validated that the close ratio set is installed. Fourth gear is 1:1 in both sets so that doesn't help.
My question was spawned from inconsistencies I've read regarding the three grooves on the input shaft. The transmission above with a confirmed close ratio gear set has three rings. Yet I've seen sources that claim that designates a wide set. Perhaps it was monkeyed with along the way and the input shaft was replaced, or perhaps three rings were in fact associated with closed gears. No big deal. By the way, it is a 1963 vintage unit.- Top
