    1966 Automatic Trans Question

Can anyone tell me what type and location of spring is used for the pull back action of the Kick Down linkage on the '66 A/T cars? I find a reference for the L36 cars, but nothing for a 327 small block.

    Thanks

    Harry -

    See Section M35, Sheet A8, View "C" - calls out #3904245 for both springs for a 327 (L-36 uses 3904255).

      John,
Do you know what the difference is between sheet A8 and A9?
I only have one spring (in front) on my 300 HP M35.

I also have one spring only on my late (July) '66 car. Also, the actuating rod between the carb and the bellcrank is not 'slotted' like the illustration in the AIM. Rather, it has an adjustable (threaded) swivel in the front (carb), and the fixed swivel/ball-joint to the rear (bellcrank) position. I've never been able to sort out or understand the AIM in this regard.

          Hi Jeff:

In the attached photo from my 67, the kickdown spring is correct but the throttle return spring is NOT correct. This is the configuration I use for driving, since the factory configuration of the throttle return results a rather wimpy throttle return.

I don't know if the 66 kickdown linkage was different, but I figured a photo from a 67 might be helpful, at least for discussion purposes. Maybe someone else knows if the 66 kickdown linkage looked like this.

Your photo looks similar to the '66 AIM illustrations, but not to my linkage. What is the attaching point for that yellow spring to the right side closest to the firewall? I saw a '65 this weekend that had similar linkage to mine (one spring, no slot, w/adjustable swivel + clip on carb end). The TV rod, however, was straight and did not have that ~10 degree bend that mine exhibits as it crosses under the throttle rod. Mine works and has full authority with the bellcrank and trans TV lever; can't envision it has ever been replaced, but who knows?

              Hi Jeff:

The rear attachment point for the TV return spring is a little tab on the support for the ignition wire harness loom.

I have wondered what the purpose of the slot is in my TV rod, since the slot never gets exercised during normal operation.

I wonder whether the addition of the slot was a safety upgrade, so that there is no way for the TV linkage to hold the throttle open. If the TV linkage jammed somehow in the full-throttle position, the slot would keep the TV linkage from holding the throttle open.

Photo below isn't a Powerglide, but it shows the tang on the plug wire support where that yellow Powerglide spring attaches (same support was used on all 327's).
