    Got a 93.2 - Just That Close!

Finally got my judging sheets back from a few weeks ago. Had resigned myself to my 2nd Flight, but when I looked at the score - 93.2 I thought - ouch! I came that close the first time out. Not bad for losing all my paint and frame points. I have already fixed/changed a dozen or so little things like bolts, screws, flasher and bracket and so on. I am just amazed at the detail contained in the sheets. It certainly is a wealth of knowledge, and hats off to the judges and the job they did. Wish there had been a bonus question! Maybe I could have made up those 0.8 points!!!! Again, thanks to the local chapter and hopefully next time 'round, I'll make it.

Wow, that was close. What caused the loss of your frame points?

Was that score with or without points for driving it there?

Didn't have a visible frame stencil, so I lost all 15 points.

Was just across town here in Columbus 4-5 miles, so I didn't get any driving points added.

Almost a 100%. I had one blinker filament (front driver) that was burnt out and wouldn't blink even though the parking light worked. They docked me 6 points, which is all I lost on ops. I drive my car a great deal, so all of my ops work and for the most part work pretty well. I took some guff because they said my car started, warmed up and dropped idle so well that it couldn't be a 67 vette!! I attribute that to my mechanical partner Bryan Craig at Mershons who has taught me everything I know about the mechanical aspects of my car. He's a master vette-head!!!! He is about to open his own shop and if you live in the midwest and want your midyear running right or have major overhaul to do, you should definitely look him up. Here's the best part - one of nicest and most HONEST guys you would ever want to meet. So, ops, the one thing that gets most people was actually my strongest suite!! Thanks Bryan!

                Hi Kirk:

If you lost 15 points solely for a missing stencil, I think you got hit kinda hard on that item.

However, don't lose sleep over one or two "unfair" deductions that may have occurred. In my experience, for every item that the judges hit me too hard for, there was another item that they failed to catch.

I think the situation is different for the big items like paint, block, and trim tag, so if you feel you have received an "unfair" deduction on a big item that is worth a lot of points, it makes sense to politely protest at the time. For all the smaller things, though, the differences seem to sort of average out.

Don't be surprised if the next time you have your car judged, you get some small deductions for things that got no deduction the first time, and get no deduction or a smaller deduction for some other things compared to the first time.

Well said Joe! I also feel the process has a way of evening out.

Re: Got a 93.2 - Just That Close!

Guess I agree, Joe! The score sheet allocates 15 originality points and 15 condition points to the line item "Frame, Frame and Numbers". Seems to me there are MANY other considerations here beyond just the frame stencil (condition of frame, correctness of frame for that specific car configuration & model year, paint, Etc.).

In order to lose 15 points, the chassis judges HAD to allocate half of the available originality points and half of the condition points to the frame stencil alone (otherwise it would have been a full deduction of 30 points) which sure seems like a STEEP 'hit' that should have been appealed to the Team Leader....

I mean, there WAS a frame there and its metal content/size is HUGE compared to the small surface area dedicated to the frame stencil! Personally, I'd have a rough time swallowing judges allocating 50% of the line item to the stencil and the other 50% of the line item to the MASSIVE chunk of metal that constitutes the frame itself!

I agree with Joe, if you are going to put your car up for judging, you should be able to accept the results. The frame question went all the way to the "top" as the actual judge on the car wasn't sure what to do, so he did check and that was what he was told to do. In reality, it is a pretty simple thing to fix and so a-stenciling I will go. Paint, I understand the process even if in the current era I may not agree with the principle. I really have nothing but appreciation for all the hard work that went into judging my car and the purpose of this initial round was to learn where I had the biggest problems, which I did. I just think it's fantastic that I came so close on the first round with a DRIVER! Thanks for all the comments, and now I know that some open and friendly discussions about some of the issues is welcomed and so I will not hesitate on the next round to point out some things that I think are correct if they are questioned. But to tell you the truth, almost all of those were single point issues and not really worth arguing about.
