    67 trim tag conflict

Recently had an opportunity to purchase a second owner 67 427 roadster that required complete restoration. The trim tag appeared to be original to the car. The car was an early VIN 13XX built in sepember of 66. The trim tag indicated the style to be 66 467 instead of 67 467. Is it possible that on early build 67 cars that the factory could have incorrectly stamped the trim tag?

Dereck; Many years ago, Joe Trybulec and I interviewed the plant worker that ran the machine that typed the trim tags and if only 1/2 of his stories were true , it was very possible.

Dereck - I have seen at least three examples of early '67 cars with "66" listed next to Style. All were St. Louis cars, and all three tags appeared to be the real deal. Here's one from '67 serial no. 018X. I'd say chances are real good your tag is original.

          David,
Thank you so much for the example of the trim tag you sent with the style listed as "66". My car is B21 and is a St. Louis car. I feel much better now that I likely do not have a counterfeit tag. I have and image of my tag I wanted to send you but have not been able to figure out how to add attachments yet. I'm a new NCRS member.
          thanks,
          Dereck

            Derek,
I have a typo trim tag which has an incorrect color code, off by one digit. It indicates a Yellow car but the car has been Goodwood Green since rolling off the line. I researched and found the original owner who told me and provided documentation (letter & photos) that he bought the car off the dealer lot as Goodwood green. I also have the build sheet and POP which indicates that the car was green. I also consulted with Al Grenning and he feels that the trim tag is a typo and has used it as an example in his seminars. So, don't get too nervous with your trim tag typo as it was not uncommon back then.

            Rick

              Bill,
I wrote an article for the Michigan NCRS "Vette Signal" on my quest to clarify the typo trim tag for an incorrect color code. It would be interesting that you and Joe write an article about your interview with the St.Louis worker and share his experiences. I am sure many members would love to hear the stories. Plus, it would help many new judges understand that mistakes were made in the production of early Corvettes.

              Regards,
              Rick

                    Derek,
You might try a new photo with less flash kick back but I see the error.

Old indian trick that I learned from John Hinckley, put a piece of tissue paper over the flash, it will reduce the glare!

New, NOS or used tissue paper?
