    1970 Ignition switch

Is there a simpler method of extracting the ignition switch other than dismantling the tilt/tele column from the steering wheel down? I need to install a new switch as the other one is broken.

    Thanks,

Have you looked at Jim Shea's papers over at Corvette Forum? He is the steering engineer guru that worked at Saginew until retirement a few years back. His steering papers cover the entire steering system from soup to nuts.

By all means do look at Jims files -- they are truly remarkable -- and he provides a great service to the Corvette community. He has been posting on this board lately.

I think in the end you are going to find out the answer to your question is no there is no easy way, or shortcut, to ignition switch removal -- without a dent puller -- a technique that used to be popular in certain circles some years ago.

Just as a point of information. The ignition switch is down under the dash on top of the steering column jacket. The ignition lock cylinder is mounted in the steering column head where you stick your key.

The lock cylinder engages a small plastic gear called a sector inside the column head. The sector engages a die cast rack. The rack connects to a rod that reaches down under the dash along the top of the column jacket to the ignition switch.

The switch requires you to drop the column in order to access and remove it. Difficult for a thief to hot wire and steal your car - difficult for you to service the switch.
