Re: Supply and demand in action
Makes one want to kick ones self for throwing away some of these back in 1959 when I went to a ducted outside air arrangement using a 58 unit (i.e. air box). Using the 57 cleaner on a 58 unit just wasn't cool as you had to use a bypass hose between two of the air tubes to the cleaner. Can't remember what I did with the chrome pieces, but the elements went in the trash. Ouch!

Re: A Perfect Match
Hi Roy,
It seems to me a $300.00 wing nut goes perfectly with a $2900.00 air cleaner element.
I paid $5200.00 for my 71 in 71. I'm pretty sure it's always been worth more than $300.00, but maybe not always more than $2900.00.

Re: Supply and demand in action
yeah keeping that filter would have been a good investment. You figure a 1 dollar filter then (I'm guessing?) would be worth like 46 dollars now at 6% interest. Course, you'd have to be real good at predicting what junk laying around the garage would be worth something in 50 years. Your friends might have thought you were a real pack rat... :P- Top

Re: Supply and demand in action
It has not hit the reserve yet!!!!!
Very smart seller. Looks to me like the seller has a stretch reserve, thinking that he might get one guy to chase it. That's a great strategy if you have a very rare item and know the market value of your item.

Re: Supply and demand in action
It will probably go for more than the current bid of $2900, especially if that's a "real" box. A Member at the Convention last year in Boston had one he'd bought at a garage sale for something like $5 and it may have been in a box but don't remember for sure. NOS blue '57 filters are rare as hen's teeth. Gary....NCRS Texas Chapter

I wonder how much my used one is worth sitting in the Eb Rose/Carroll Shelby Sebring engine. Not an over the counter piece...but one that came with the engine...from day one.
It is fun to speculate.
I am convinced that we have not even begun to see the real escalation of value on premium five star collector cars.
What do you think "real" hard to find parts will be worth as the availabilty dries up?

Re: Supply and demand in action
I imagine the price will come back down to ground once a respectable reproduction is created. With the original filters fetching this kind of money, it is only a matter of time before one is produced.- Top

Re: Supply and demand in action
Well, if the General would have had the forsight to cover the thing so it couldn't be judged 50 years later, owners of this fine car could save themselves 3-10 thousand dollars. Take a vacation or two. :P- Top
