62 Valve stem caps

Am I correct in saying the 62 valve stem cap is a black Dill 627 with the smaller logo?

Yes, that is what I have found is correct.

To my knowledge, the 61-62 folks don't look for the Dills when they judge the 61-62 cars, but they were certainly used on your car. However, original cars I have looked at from 1960 through the mid-60s used a DILL 627 cap with a smooth nub and large font that reaches from the edge of the nub to the edge of the cap. See photos. I'm looking with no luck for a set of originals myself, so I wish you good luck if you want the original style.

After the mid-60s, the font is about half that size and the nub has a depression in the middle. These are available everywhere and even those who judge this item will usually give you credit for them. The new style is what I have on my car.

I recently discovered that my 1991 Sears Craftsman lawn tractor has the Dill caps with the 627.

Hi all,

Since a picture is worth a thousand words, here is a pic of the new style DILL 627. Compare this with the other two pics I posted.

My question, though, is will we start restoring old lawnmowers now!

I have been trying for several years to get a clear definition of when the large font vs. the small font were used and more importantly which came first. Thanks for your answer. I have a bag full of each type as well as a limited supply of the original 53-59 metal Schrader caps (not the repops). I would be happy to give you a set of the large font DIL's for your car. I can either mail them to you or if your going to either Hershey or the NCRS meet @ Old Towne in January, I can bring them there. Send me an email. Thanks again.
