    Bill Mitchell Remembered

Today marks the 20th anniversary of the passing of one of America's greatest automotive stylists, William Leroy (Bill) Mitchell (7/2/1912 -
9-12-1988). Best known for the 1963 and 1968 Corvette, he was the designer primarily responsible for some of the best-looking production cars that GM ever produced:

    1960 Corvair - 1963 Corvette - 1963 Buick Riviera - 1963 Pontiac Grand Prix - the entire line of 1965 full-sized GM cars - 1966 Olds Toronado -
1970 1/2 Camaro & Firebird - 1976 Cadillac SeVille - 1977 Chevrolet Caprice - 1980 Cadillac SeVille, and more than a dozen Corvette show cars (e.g., Mako Shark, Manta Ray, etc.)

Mitchell was flambouyant, creative, controversial, outspoken, dictatorial, and both admired and despised by members of GM staff. However, there is no denying his talent as a designer.

"Bill Mitchell ruled over GM design staff during its most creative and exciting years in corporate history. No matter his mood, his manner, his style - he gave the place a verve and excitment it never had before or since. He brought out the best creative energies from all of us, and he oversaw the design of the greatest diversity of cars ever produced."
    GM Interior Designer George Moon

Perhaps the best way to describe his philosophy is through direct quotation, so I'll present my 10 favorite "Mitchell-isms":

#10) "If you want a well-styled automobile, buy a Corvette ... if you
want a cake of soap, buy a Ford."
#9) "My way has never involved market research, what a lot of bull.
Frank Lloyd Wright didn't go around ringing doorbells asking people
what kind of houses they wanted."
#8) "I think the committee approach to automotive design is ... well
    what I think is unprintable."
#7) "A good designer has got to be creative, and to be creative you've
got to be dissastisfied and discontent. It makes for a terrible
    personality."
#6) "There isn't a good-looking car that I did that market research had
anything to do with. And market research never touched the
Corvette - never. I shudder to think what would have happened if
    it had."
#5) "General Motors has the money for competiton. I've always thought
they should use it. We've had some hairy Corvettes that never got
    out."
#4) "That's the fun of a sports car. There's so much you can do with it
to make it more exciting, you're not constricted. You've got the
freedom of knowing that what you do isn't destined to be used for
    a car pool."
#3) "Designing a small car is like tailoring a suit for a dwarf."
#2) "I abhor the subjugation of beauty and elegance to function. A
    dumb-looking box is still a dumb-looking box."
#1) " A car has to have enough interest so that it looks different each
time you glance at it, you see a little more. That's what a
    Corvette should always be."

Another Mitchell quote that like... "fenders should have creases, like a freshly pressed pair of pants". I may not have the words exactly right, but the concept is there. I know he was referring to the crease on front fender tops of many 60's GM cars.

Mitchell's cars had a profound effect on me, I'm a continuing student of 50's and 60's automotive styling, concept cars and the many designers who deserve to share credit for these fantastic cars.

Anyone who loves 60's and 70's GM cars should celebrate this man's vision. He had some big shoes to fill when Harley Earl passed the torch and he did a great job!

I would love to hear from anyone with similar interests or remerberances of Bill Mitchell and the GM design studios during that era, please email me at jgoldacsind@yahoo.com.

There is an interesting article on Bill Mitchell...his early design efforts, his career as a GM stylist, the transition from Harley Earl to Bill, to Bill's retirement in 1977... in the March 2004 issue of Corvette Magazine. Michael Lamm is the author.

        Best regards,

You've probably seen the metal garage-decor signs in recent years that say "Don't even THINK about parking here"; that's not new, and was created at GM Styling in the 60's.

I remember walking into the Styling executive garage at the Tech Center in 1967, and on the wall in front of Mitchell's parking space was a very nicely-painted portrait-oriented sign that said, "Don't even THINK about parking here".

Mitchell was very much into exotic Italian cafe-racer motorcycles (Ducati, MV Agusta, Laverda, etc.), and frequently rode them to work, in custom-made Bates leathers. He was short and on the portly side, and in his leathers he looked like a silver-blue stuffed sausage. Of course, nobody ever told him that - they'd have been history.

Can it really be 31 years since the NY Auto show had an exhibit honoring Mr. Mitchell upon his retirement? I had admired his work long before I joined the Not Correctly Restored Stingray Society. #1 must have also, since he purchased a new 1963 FI, but you never hear from him.

I worked for a Bill Becker at EMD who claimed to be a friend of Bill Mitchell's. Guess they went to GMI together and, if so, he got the short end of the stick ending up as Service Department Mgr. @ EMD (the Locomotive Division). He too did the bike thing, having a number of exotic bikes. I used to sit around and listen to him talk at noon hour as he came down to our group to play cards. He'd spend an hour telling us the best way to "Lay a Bike Down", which to me seemed like the talk of an eccentric nut! Guess they may have been friends after all.

I became an admirer of Frank Lloyd Wright around the time I bought my 1980 Corvette in 1988. Now that I own a 1963 coupe, I can see Bill Mitchell was cut from the same mold.

This is also an interesting read about Bill Mitchell from the autoextremist website:

too bad he was not in charge of QC or maybe GM would not be in the trouble it is today.
