    Ignition Coil: "238 B-R" (Joe?)

I found this in my old parts locker, and measure the primary resistance @ 1.8 ohms.

The three "202" coils that I have, all measure 1.3 ohms, which is, I believe, the proper resistance value needed.

What is the application for this coil (if any?, ). Was it used as a paperweight?

Joe, I already asked this info. See August 4th, 2008. It's for small block Chevy, etc.
Hinckley answered a lot of questions on this coil also. Click on his name and look at his old posts. Do the same with mine. All answers around Aug 4. John

The "238 B-R" coil was GM #1115238. It was applicable to 1968-74 Corvettes as well as other Chevrolet models. It was a SERVICE-only coil. I don't think that it was ever used in PRODUCTION but it's possible it was so-used for some application(s).

Some references indicate the '238' coil is applicable to 1967 Corvettes as well as 68-74. However, I believe this is an error. I think the "238" was applicable to 1967 passenger cars, but not 1967 Corvettes.

        Thank you J and J.
        In that order.

In looking at Breakerless SE technical sales literature, it states, and I quote:

"The Breakerless-SE was designed for classic restoration cars. Consequently, the Breakerless-SE is compatible with all original/stock GM Delco Remy coils when used in conjunction with the factory installed ballast resistor. These original-type coils are high-inductance and have a primary resistance of 1.2 to 1.8 ohms. Most aftermarket or "hi-performance" coils are compatible as well, as long as their primary resistance is within the range of 1.2 to 1.8 ohms. The Breakerless-SE will perform at its best when using a coil with a primary resistance of 1.3 ohms."

Looks like Corvettes with "238" and similar coils ( with 1.8 ohms primary resistance) are SOL when it comes to "performance at its best" with Breakerless SE.

My original-owner 1971 LS-5 car, built 12/29/70, was delivered with a 1115238 coil. I currently am using the Breakerless SE setup with the "238" coil and the car could not run better.

          Thanks, Jim
