    TIM/Judging Manual & Left/Right Clarify

I am less than 3mo. NCRS member and new owner of a 66' "Rally Red" Coupe and trying to get her ready for a late Sept 08 regional meet.

After purchase of the car, the first thing I did was become a NCRS member. Next, I ordered the 1966 TIM/Judging Manual. Having studied the manual from cover to cover, I am having some difficulty with staying oriented to the correct side of the car (ie- left vs. right) when reading the manual information.

My work life has been within the aviation industry. From this background, I have been trained to get oriented to the work/repair procedure from "Aircraft Right or Left", viewed from a sitting position in the cockpit. I cannot find any such guidance in the TIM/JM. Am I missing written guidance somewhere in the manual? Or, does the Automotive industry assume "Left/Right" as viewed from sitting in the car or standing in front of the car looking front to rear?

I am very interested to hear comments. I know it is a small point, but, I think it would make the instructions of the TIM/JM easier to follow.

    Happy Wheels,

    Dan

    Dan, welcome.

    Drivers side = Left
    Passenger side = Right

BTW, you may want to post in the Technical Discussion section.

Thanks so much. Makes sense to me; driver/left, pass/right. I just expected this type of info to be in the admin remarks, etc., of the manual.

Well, I thought I had this question in the correct place. Thanks for clarifying this for me. Dan

Just think of the references from the viewpoint of one seated in the driver's seat! With this mental reference, you'll never forget and be confused again...

          Hi Dan,
Along the same lines as your question, I find it interesting that for parts that had a right and left, the right side part # ends in an even digit and the left side part # ends in an odd digit.
          Regards,
          Alan

PS: I'm sure you'll find being a NCRS member a great experience!

OK Jack; here's another point I've always been curious about -- rotation.
Is there an equivalent base reference for claiming clockwise or counter-cw ? ie. the engine rotates CCW viewed from the driver seat, but the driveshaft rear yoke rotates CW when viewed from the same location [but you have to turn your head to observe ].

Or, must one always state location of observer (ie distributor rotor rotates CW when observed from above) ?

                Re: TIM/Judging Manual & Left/Right Clarify

"Common Conventions"... now that is a good point, and, it helps to clarify why I think it would be helpful to have a written statement as how to determine "Right vs. Left" of car or assembly being viewed? You make it clear that if I'm told to find something fitted on the "right side of the motor", that I should know that this part is oriented as viewed from the "flywheel side" of the motor. I've always thought of the right or left side of the motor as viewed from looking into the engine compartment from the front of the car.

In any case, I stand corrected about the TIM/JM not making any statements as to orientation/position of parts. I found the correct position for my 66' Coupe wiper arms refered as "Right/passenger side", and "Left/driver side".

I am definitely enjoying getting acquainted with NCRS and this website. Thanks for all your "Welcome aboard" comments. I hope to make a good show later this month with my new '66 "RallyRed" Coupe! It will be a blast to just drive to his meet. It will be a "Flight of Two" Red's as my buddy with drive his '65 "RallyRed" Coupe along also. Thanks, Dan
