    1963 Amp Gauge

    To all,

    My amp gauge is bouncing around still. I had everything electrical checked out from the Regulator wiring to the alternator and the battery.

    The gauge spikes to almost to all the way right as I'm driving along, but when the car is idling, it shifts back to "0". It does not go to the discharge side of the gauge. Is there something I need to put in the system to stabilize this gauge or is the gauge just shot.

    Thanks for your advice.

    Jerry

      Rick,

      Do you remember how much he charged you to rebuild the gauge? Corvette Clocks by Roger will sell me a GM Repro for $89.95.

      Thanks

        Gerald,
        Contact Bill Harrison at (561)676-3099. He does amazing work and is very concerned with Quality. You will not be disappointed and his price will depend just on what work has to be done.

        Tell him I sent you. May cost a few extra bucks, but in all seriousness, worth the call.
        David

          David;

          Let's see if I have this right;
          If Gerald says you sent him, it will cost him a few extra buck?, Ha!

          Seriously, thanks for posting the info. I may pull out my cluster this coming cool season and have my ammeter checked out. Unlike Gerald's, mine doesn't move much at all yet I know the system is charging.

            I went down the restoration route with my 1963 cluster... used a very reputable outfit who shall remain nameless. Three of the four gauges failed within a year... I wound up going with the current GM reproductions which cost in the neighborhood of $100 each and look and function exactly like the (restored) originals... Food for thought... it may make better financial and operational sense to go this way...

              Re: 1963 Amp Gauge

              My oil pressure gauge had been leaking for many years (dripping on to the E-Brake handle), so I disconnected it. I bought a used replacement from a salvage yard about 30 years ago, but never installed it because the face and hand don't look near as good as mine and I will have to swap them out. My success at doing a similar project with my clock was a failure, so I'm not in a big hurry to mess up my oil gauge too. I rehabed my cluster back in 1976 and, with the exception of the oil gauge and ammeter's laziness, all still works well and looks good. I put in all new NOS bulbs at that time only because all the others were "smokey" looking (black clouded glass), but they still worked and I still have them.

                I can't speak for Bill, but I know his work and I seriously doubt one would end up with these results if he did the work. Personally, I'd rather have my gauges brought back to life for much less than buying repro's, but that's just me. I could only imagine that if Bill found a gauge that was 'borderline' he'd contact the owner, without hesitation and explain the options.

                The way I look at it.......What's a phone call cost to find out the specific details?

                Stu,
                Sure....How else would Bill be able to pay me off in Beer?
