    A water pump on a 73 454 #

When I bought my 73 LS4 it had a incorrect water pump on it. The part number cast in it was 3856284. It had a date code of G175. Or it could be Q175 or C175.

Does anyone know what year this pump could be for?

I did get the original water pump with the car when I bought it and I had it rebuilt so I do not need one.

G175 could be July 17 1965. Q is not possible, C would March.

Not sure of the original application but think this P/N was used on 66-69 big block engines.

Yes, the 3856284 casting was used for all 1965 to E1969 Corvette big blocks. It was also used for ALL 1965-68 Chevrolet big blocks. So, there are LOTS of these castings around. The "G175" casting date is July 17, 1965. It can't be 1975 since this casting was out-of-production by then.

Thank you for the info that it is for a 66 Big Block water pump. It will be correct for the first months of 66 production. I think I will put it on Ebay as it is good for someone. You are always a wealth of info. Thank you

Keep in mind that the date assumes that the first character is a "G". If it's actually a "C" (March) that would mean it's suitable for a 1965 L-78. In fact, if it's a "C" month code, that probably would make it one of the earliest examples of the 3856284 ever made.

No, I've seen several mid-Feb ('B') water pumps and, if memory serves, the pump on Barry Blocher's 396 car (a prototype shipped to the Milford proving grounds has a November/December 1964 cast date...

It is a G. So it is July. Thank you all for the help.

Keep in mind that while the body may be for 66-69 Corvette big blocks, the pump might be reconfigured for the 71-74 big blocks as there were differences in the pilot shub as well as the bolt circle for the fan. I think the pilot hub was 5/8" diameter until 1966-70. Thereafter, it increased to 3/4". The bolt pattern also changed. Mecanical modifications might be necessary to accommodate earlier model years.

Any of the big block "short" waterpump castings can be configured for either the 65-70 configuration or the 71-74 configuration. The differences in the pump assemblies are limited to the bearing/shaft assembly and hub. The bearing/shaft assembly is always replaced when a pump is rebuilt and the hub can also be replaced.
