    C2 VIN TAG Placement

I'm considering the purchase of a 63 and I'm concerend with the VIN tag placement. It's spot welded several times on each side, and is placed right up against the Trim tag (no space between them at all). Can anyone verify the authenticity of this placement?

Your description sounds about right for 63, I have lots of pictures of 63 trim tags with multiple welds.

Which BRINGS up a good question which plate is install first, trim or vin. I thought the trim, but in this case looks like the vin. The weld on the left side of the vin would have made a mark on the trim tag. I never seen a vin that close to a trim, thats unusual but not impossible. Phil 8063

            Hi Hank,

What's the body number and does it match up?

Body 9611/VIN 19091 seems to fit; my info shows 9594/19051 as a fit & 9687/19272 also. But I have NEVER seen that location of the two tags. It may be time to get the Trim Tag book out and see if the car suddenly acquired leather, changed color or ?????

                    Re: C2 VIN TAG Placement

Trim tag maches - paint, interior color are good. All other "tag" numbers appear to match: (1) Body Build Date = K2; (2) VIN=19901; (C) Body Style Numeric Sequence is 9611 - all indications of a late production car. My only concerns are (1) the multiple welds (although this is said to be not unusual), and (2) the placement of the tags (no space). I did find a photo of another "late" car with similar welds - photo attached here - but the placement shows the typical space between the tags in this example.

Hmmmm, I just noticed the unusually course grinder marks all the way accross the bar behind the VIN tag, including the center area which is typically devoid of any marks as in Hank's pic.

                        Re: C2 VIN TAG Placement

The VIN tag on my 63, which is also a 119,xxx serial number, has a 3/8" gap between it and the trim tag. The spot welds look smaller/neater, and I don't see any course grind marks or paint edge at the tag like in your picture. I would suspect a re-tagging which may explain the repositioning offset from original spot welds and the grinding, and perhaps touch up on the paint around the tag - but then, what do I know. Sorry.

                          Re: C2 VIN TAG Placement

I think we'd all agree that attachment is not typical, but a lot of spot welded tags on solid axle and 63's have been off and reattached over the years.

So how would this car fare on the judging field in this aspect?

My opinion is just that, only my opinion, but I would guess if this tag is original to the car, it has been re installed. I don't think it left the factory as shown. JMO.

Here's one that's pretty bad, I'm thinking a bad day at the plant with the spot welder. And grinding was typical.
