    License Plate Frame

The Judging/Reference Manual asks for "License Plate attachment frames" (sorry for the bad quote, but I do not have my Manual at hand) rear and front (the latter for cars that have been delivered to a state requiring a front plate, too - just like my Minnesota-delivered car)...

How do those frames look like, and where can I get a set from?

    Thanks for your help

Flat stainless steel with spring clips on back. Reproduced or swap meet or ebay.

      Re: License Plate Frame

Never saw one in books or on other pictures... And on ebay, there's just the "usual" frames to "show off" the plate itself.

      Anybody have a picture???

      But, thank you Wayne!

        Re: License Plate Frame

I can take a photo later and post it but be aware that the repros differ in the size of the rivet head and (perhaps) the exact dimensions. I am certain about the rivets but less certain about the rest.

I bought license frames for my 72 from the local Chevy dealer a few years ago and they passed judging without any deductions. On the other hand, they were about four times the price of the repros.

Yes, in the first go, even a repro's picture will help - I have no idea, what to look for, then...

I a second go, we then can discuss the differences (which has already been done, as far as I can see from recent postings).

          Thanks!

Apparently edited by NCRS software. Link doesn't work, but there is one there.

Aaah, found it - not too spectacular for a price of 45 bucks!

And that was delivered with the car one or two times just to frame the license plate with? Interesting... I thought it might have been some kind of attachment bracket to mount the plate to the car somehow.......

Thank you A LOT for the "enlightment"!

                  Re: License Plate Frame

Oliver, a little confused, your initial JG quote sounds like it refers to the Semi-Gloss Black "Mounting Bracket" for those States requiring a front plate...
the responders are referring to the Stainless Steel License plate Frame.

Mike - yes, that's because I didn't quote it the right way from the Manual! The front bracket is attached to my car, but I was wondering about those ss-frames... How they look like, what value they add - and how to get them nowadays...
                    So, the responders understood.

Oliver I don't know about other original owners that bought a C3 new, however my 70 had the front mounting bracket/support for the front license plate on it when I bought new off the show room floor. The best I can remember it did not come with SS trim for the actual license plate because I would still have it. The rear license plate still has SS trim for the license plate that has been on my car since new. I really don't remember if the dealer added it or it came from the factory with it.

My 1970 came with two SS license plate frames, but then Illinois was and is a two-plate state.

I saw my '77 and '78 SA come off the truck when delivered after we ordered them. Both cars were ordered from and delivered to Crumback-Symons Chevrolet in New haven, IN and neither had the frames with the car. Frames for each car came from the Parts Dept.

I don't know about other years, bu the judging manual for 1968-72 years calls for two frames to be judged. They can be on the car or in it.

I believe that 1975 was the last year that the stainless steel license plate frames were supplied in Corvettes. The same style frames were used from 1963 until that time.

Want some anyway? No problem. GM #3797485, the original part number issued for the 1963 model year and still available from GM (for about 50 bucks each, GM list). Are these exactly the same as those used for 1977? No, but only because NONE were used for 1977. Are they exactly the same as those used for 1963? No again as there are slight differences even though the part number remains the same.
