    Ballast Resistor Question????

The ballast resistor in my car is original(1965 327/300 116,500 miles). Probably pretty lucky it has lasted this long. Probably pretty lucky to get through a PV in Apri too. But there have been a few problems recently with engine suddenly dying and then running fine for a time and then again, engine dies.

I plan to have the ballast resistor rebuilt. But I want to purchase a replacement. Does GM make a replacement for my car? If they do not who does? Does John Pirkle rebuild ballast resistors? If he does not who does?

    Thanks,

    DP

Paragon Corvette sells a reproduction ballast resistor.

    Their web is www.corvette-paragon.com

if the engine intermittanly runs and stops, its probably not the ballast resistor. remove the ingition harness(from the unexposed side of the fuse panel) on the engine side of the firewall just below the drivers side hood female hood latch. clean the contacts then coat them with 3-M silicone paste. good luck, mike

Dwight, Here is one way to restore a ballast resistor. 1st of all I assume you have the original like you said. The one with the "tab" sticking out the side where the BR attaches to the firewall.
Look for a NOSR ballast resisitor. . D1110 or D1111. I don't know which one you need.
Use this new service replacement one from GM and your old original bracket and you are in business.
To remove the bracket get a dremel with a cut off wheel and slice thru the back side.
Now if your car is original unrestored just use the original bracket over again as is and tack weld it back together.
If you want the part to look pretty then you have to get it zincad and then slip it over the new BR and tack weld the back side.
A lot of the NCRS guys in our chapter are doing that.
        Not that difficult. John D.

What is the white material the ballast resistor coiled wire is packed in?

Could that material be replaced with epoxy as is sometime used in ignition coils?

            Dwight,

Go for a ride and when the engine cuts off check with a test light for power at the pink wire going to the ballast resistor from the ignition switch (remember to leave the key in the run position) . No power here means there is nothing wrong with resistor. Agree with Mike, check for bad connection at firewall plug.
