68-72 Grill Paint

In search of the correct textured grill paint, I took the original and revised DuPont paint numbers from this site to my local DuPont retailer and was told that they were discontinued. The retailer called DuPont and was told that there was no replacement. I dropped the issue and focused on other portions of the project.

Today, I was at the local PPG dealer for supplies and I showed them the original 1970 DuPont number. Much to my surprise, they were able to mix a quart of the correct lacquer on the spot, including the texture additive. The color appears to be right on. For those that may need some, the PPG # is 32939.

I recently used a product for these grills from a company called OEM Paints. A perfect match, with the texture. Also used there prep. paint, that helps adhere the texture paint to the smooth surface. Been about six months and countless washes without a chip. Little expensive but great results.

I found that the gray phosphate paint that Paragon among others sold, while not too authentic for hood latches, was a VERY good match for the 3 pieces of the front grill.

You're welcome!
The aerosol cans were available no custom mixing required. I'll pull the cans out and look for a part number or specific name. I think it was simply called GM grill paint, but I'll check.

Norm, You're the kind of vette guy that I admire! Anyone that bought one of these cars so many years ago and kept it, truely amazes me! I see stars in your future! Good Luck in San Jose, if I'm lucky I'll see you there. Back to the topic, the cans that I have are still half full or more, if anyone is interested in them let me know. I don't think I'll need them any time soon, and would hate to see them go to waste. Does spray paint have a shelf life (it must)?

Even though I had a new '68, 40+ years later my memory fails me on this subject. I'm still a little clueless on how the '68 grills should look - only the leading edge on the horizontal bars? How far back on the blade is painted? Finally, doesn't that require a lot of masking when using spray vs brushing? Can anyone help an early oldtimer?

Kevin... thanks for the kind words.... its strange, but from the day I bought it,,,, it was always in my mind that I would keep it.... hence why its totally unmolested. However,,,, it also is driven. NOT a daily, only on sunny days in the summer.... but it is driven. Was my only car for 1-1/2yrs when new,,,, then was the new wife's for a while (she's gone but the Vette is still here) then it was the third car for a long while,,, then it was driven only once or twice a year,,,, and now around 500-1,000 miles a year. (Bend added almost 800 two weeks ago)

Yes I'm not greedy,,,,, just having "4 stars" in the near future (like Patricks and yours) would be fantastic!!! Thanks again!!!
