Three step pan with plug in the center. I know how to tell if GM replacement compared to original but I have such pan with oil dip stick indent on the passender side. Anyone know what this fits? I know 56 has a welded in part for the dipstick, but this one just has the detent on the passenger side. Thanks in advance.

Could you post photo(s) of this pan? I don't know of any 55-62 small block casting that had any sort of provisions for a right side, in-block dipstick, let alone any that actually used an right side, in-block dipstick. So, I can't imagine why any original 55-62 oil pan would have provisions for an in-block, right side dipstick (i.e. right side "V" relief).
Except for a few early in-pan right side dipstick applications, there were no right side dip stick small blocks until the 1979 model year.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Hey, Joe, I think you'll find Jerry is right about those early '56 V8's. The RH dipstick is pretty well documented with nice pictures in Noland Adams book + the text of the NCRS Judging Guide confirms. See below.- Top

Jack-----
There's no doubt that early 1956 used a right side dipstick. However, the dipstick tube for that configuration was mounted IN-PAN, not in-block. So, the 1956 pan for right side dipstick had no "V-shaped" relief on the right side. It's the latter feature which Jerry described this pan as having which reveals it's not a 1956 pan.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top
