Rear End Date codes

I am putting a 63 back together. What is the difference in serial number of car and date code of the rear end assy?? according to the NCRS SPec guide my car was a mid April 63 build. How far back in time is the right timeframe for a rear end date code??

how muchy are rears going for these days that do not need rebuilding?

The NCRS and NCCB allow up to 6 months prior between the manufacturing date of dated components and the build date of the car. In actual practice, the interval was usually much less----more like 2 weeks to 2 months for a rear end assembly.

I don't follow the prices of used components too much. However, I would expect that one could expect to pay between $500-750 for a good, used rear end assembly in as-is usable condition. However, it might be hard to find a 1963 assembly in such condition for that price.

Michael, on my April 20th built 63 I have a April 10th built 3.36 rear, ( CB 4 10 63 ). The casting dates are from 12/62.

On my May built 63 I have the same casting date as Harry but the stamped date is CJ 5 4 63

So - Harry and Bob - what engines are you guys running in your cars? My car is running a 1st racing design solid lifter cam (#140), and came originally with a 3:70, which it seemed to like for launches. IT was originally a 340HP car.

I'm for good roadworthyness, as I plan to drive this, but would like to maintain originality if possible. I am looking at a 3.36 pumpkin, and think it wuold be OK, but am seeking reassurance with use on the engine setup. Tranny is either the original T-10 or a 2.52 Low Muncie (currently in the car)

The original rear was a CX 4 2 63 (non posi 3.70), but is long gone, which is consistent with your cars being within a month of the VIN #. The 3.36 I'm looking at is a CB 1 9 63, which per this thread is passable as a valid rear for this car. Another option I have is to use a 65 rear I have that is a 3:55 and punt proper date codes.

Michael,

I think a 3.36 rear with your engine set up will make for a terrible street car. The car will probably go 90 MPH in first gear but your going to buy a lot of clutches. I don't think I would go higher then 370 with a wide box (2.54) transmission. JMHO

My car is a 300 hp and the CJ rear should be a 3:08. To be honest I never checked to see if it is actually a 3:08. The car has a power glide which should have come from the factory with a 3:36 but the dates on it are good for the build date.
The car moves out quite well and you can spin the tires without much effort.

The Camaro "-140" cam is probably the worst possible choice you could make for use in a normal street engine, especially with a rear end (numerically) lower than 4.11; it was designed for only one purpose - to make big power from 4500-8500 rpm with cross-ram dual quad Holleys in the race Trans-Am Camaros, and has little usable torque below 3500 - even less than the "30-30".

You will NOT like that cam with a 3.36 axle.
