For what it's worth, I asked the mechanic the same question. Since the orginal shifter lever had been re-chromed as part of the restoration process, it would involve removing the chrome, building up the blade to a very precise thickness/shape and re-chroming the shifter. The time and effort, not to mention the direct costs, did not make the idea cost effective when an identical shifter can be purchased new. By the way, in some post-purchase consumerism, I found the same unit for $25 less at Paragon ($200).
