    58 Trunk Lids

A friend asked me this question, and I'm not 100% sure of the answer.

Do ALL 58 trunk lids have the "bosses" on the underside of the lid where the posts from the trunk irons are bolted?

Seems I recall that some do, some don't, but I'm no 58 expert.

    Any input?

    TIA.

    Re: 58 Trunk Lids

58s had several running changes. I have seen several variations. Not sure that I have seen them all, but very early didnt have any bosses and were essentially 57s. As the year went on bosses at the braces were added, then raised pads under the attachements etc. Then very late, I have seen them with no bosses again. I assume this was the 59 change. So , to answer your question, it is my opinion that not all of them had bossses.

      Thanks, Wayne.

I helped a friend restore a 58 about 15 years ago. I remember many running changes, one that comes to mind is the switch of the hood support from one side to the other.

I'll have to ask this fellow if his car is early/mid/late.

Back about 20 years ago I restored my 58, Vin 297, and it had all the early 58 wierd stuff such as RH hood support, etc. It did have the 'nubs' on the inside of the trunk lid. I also assisted in restoring 58 Vin 003, it too had 'nubs', but they looked like they had been put on with resin, not molded in. That car had lots of hand worked parts and built up areas to make the doors and hood 'fit' nicely. Was a pilot car with 'sand cast' parts such as the arm rest end caps, all pre-production shop fab! Also remember the 58 trunk irons were held on with goldish pal nuts with a rubber seal inside. Can't recall when they did away with the 'nubs' though?

Here is one version. Notice how the lid frame has two little bump outs on either side of the latch housing.

            Thanks for the pic, Joe.

Not sure I'm seeing the bump-outs.

              Chuck,

If you save and increase the % size you can see the small protrusion. Wonder if they used to same mold to make the 59-60 and simply ground off the tit? Can't imagine the cost of a new mold for the 59-60 frame. See any evidence of ground off edges on a 59-60 lid frame?

Was the lid frame two pieces like the 57 lids? The center section including the latch housing was a seperate piece on 57.

Yes - all C1 trunk lids were two pieces (inner and outer panels), bonded together.

Wayne is exactly right Chuck. I've seen them both ways. especially on a few bowtie cars we've judged.

Here's a picture of the "bosses". My early March car doesn't have them and have never taken a deduction because they're not present.

                      John,
I was not questioning the frame and the lid as being one or two pieces.

I was refering to the frame being two pieces.

On my two 57 lids the center section is a seperate piece. On a 60 frame it is one piece but the 'edge' is apparent at the location where the 57 was molded seperately.

So, I glean that there seems to be no rhyme or reason as to when the padded vs. non padded lids were used.
