    C2 Tire Tub Date Stamp

    Hi;

This is another item which I am trying to take care of to pick up a couple more judging points....

The tire tub on my '65 does not have an original date stamp. Judges told me to find a date stamp and some white ink (I do not think I have ever come across white ink), and stamp a date on the inside of the tub...

I suspect if I go to Staples or someplace like that they will not have a date stamp going back to 1965... Anybody have any idea where I can get this stuff... the stamp and the white ink???

    Thanks in advance!

    Joel

I can't say for sure, and I know someone will know better than I, but I thought not all carriers were dated.

I'm with Tom, I don't think all were dated. I think it has been speculated that the tubs were shipped in big stacks, and only the tub on top of the stack had a date.

Regardless, Staples, etc should be able to have a custom stamp made for you with whatever you want.

One idea for the white ink - try "Wite-Out" Never tried however that would be my first stop. PS- I've only seen 1 or 2 originals with the stamp, but have others may have real story.

Thanks guys.... The way the judge talked, it was supposed to be there. I think it cost me one or two points. For a couple of bucks, I might as well do it just to cover my bases...

If it were mine, and the tub never had a date, I wouldn't date it. If I were going to date it though, I'd get a good photo of an original to duplicate. Just a generic stamp with a date would be pointless.

This thread from 2005 includes a picture, but my '67 does not have a stamp and I won't be adding it.

Joel: I have a 1967 car with the original tire tub and lid. I agree with others that not all tubs and lids have dates. My lid is dated and the tub is not. In a post dated November 20, 2007, Scott Sinclair stated that he has found about 25% of the tubs have dates, and about 10% of the lids have dates.

For white ink, I suggest white model airplane/hobby paint. Let it dry a bit so that it becomes very thick before using.

Regarding the date: My car is a late March build (approx March 28), and the lid is dated March 9, 1967. About 2-3 weeks prior to the car build. The date stamp is "MAR-9 1967". The dash was apparently used as needed as a placeholder for the second digit in the day of the month. The letters/numbers are 3/16 inch high and 1/8 inch wide. The total length of the date code is approximately 1-1/4 inch. The letters for the month appear to be all capitals. I assume that only three letters were used for the months, but I do not know this for a fact. So check out the archives for other examples, if needed. Hope this helps.

Re: C2 Tire Tub Date Stamp

Joel - At times the information in the TIM&JGs may be subject to interpretation and if the judge seems "positive" and you are not in agreement, you should elevate the question to the Team Leader.

In looking at the 66 TIM&JG, it reads "The housing may have a white "ink" stamped production date." My interpretation of the words is the some "might" have the "ink" stamping and some "might not" have the "ink" stamping and this is consistent with my observations in that not all "original" housing have the "ink" stamped production date.

So, if you have the original tub (Note: As far as I know the newer production tire tubs available from Chevrolet SERVICE DEPARTMENTs did not have a date stamp) and the inside has not been "tarted up" or messed with and there is no date stamp, I suggest as others have that it never had a date stamping. The date code stampings were remarkably durable, in fact the one on the tire tub housing of my 67 has lasted some 40 plus years.

It's your car, so it's your call, but as someone has suggested, check out some original production date stampings because you'll want to do it right.

                      Have fun, Pete
