Which Vacuum Advance Can to use....?

I have a 327 x 365hp RE type and wanted to check and make sure I still have the correct vacuum advance can installed, before I potentially replace it.

I know there is some differences between different cans, but wanted to get replies from yous experts.....so when I check my vacuum etc this winter....I know I am at least starting off near correct.

David -- You didn't specify whether your '64 L76 distrib. was T.I (1111060); early points type (1111062) or later points (1111069). No matter , as all three take the 1116236 vac can, per Delco Remy Test Spec supplement DR-324S-1.

I don't have the benefit of the new '63-'64 TIM&JG, but if it's like the '65 book, this is the vac can called out for the 060 and 069 for that MY.

It's the early points type (1111062) I think because it's a Nov '63 build 1964 car.....I'm also not near the car at this time. But it's definitely not a TI car.

From other threads I've read, folks seem to always be referring to a 3 number can? Or the Napa replacement. Do I take your reply to mean that mine should have a 236 stamped on it, or a 324?

Sorry for the confusing question, but still trying to make sense of it all. Where on the can do you find the number(s)?

Here's a shot of the can. There's also generic replacements; others may chime in with an equivalent aftermarket.

David, be very careful of 'repro' 236 VA's, I had one, it split the diaphram after a year without warning. I believe Don Baker is making a high quality one, might give him a try for correct 236 unit.

Also, be careful of Corvette Parts Houses repros, specifically those sold by Volunteer Vette, Paragon and LIC. They don't meet specs for function. They are stamped 236 which may be fine for judging, but not for drive ability. You may still be able to get one from www.gmpartsdirect.com, their #88924985. Several of us have gotten them there recently and they check out with a Mityvac. They do have trouble keeping them in stock, so you may have to wait.

You are certainly right to pursue whatever vendor you like; however, I went through a lengthy excercise trying to find a 236 (B28) about a month or two ago. NAPA I found has consolidated about three different VAC's under one generic part; their #1675 which is a B26. It will not meet the B28 specs; "begin @5"hg all in at 8"hg (16 degrees)" which meets Duke's 2" rule. This is critical for any L76, particularly 64's on up as that 30-30 cam has very low idle vacuum. I wanted to try one on my 63 w/the Duntov which is not so bad, and it helps.

I got a used one from our good friend John D. and another was sent to me by Donald L. The new one I was able to get was from: www.gmpartsdirect.com for $11.00. John H. was also able to pick up a few from them for his stock. Other than that, every other source I tried was a dead end or sent the wrong VAC (labeled 236, but not to spec on performance). I have found that even the new one had to have the stem straightened as it was dragging in the guide slot and binding in the advance plate hole. I did thjis using two sets of vice grips; one to hold the stem and the other to twist it. That way you avoid torquing the diaphragm.

Thanks for the free plug Dan. We have too styles of the 236's. One for the show car and one for the drivers. They are basically the same appearance-really the same. Difference is the first batch onlly has 236 stamped in it. The 2nd batch will have the suffix. I think it's 16 but forget.
They are individually tested and dead nuts.
Call Don Baker as he is loaded with them and this ain't ebay you know.

No more NAPA ones. I do know a guy that has some though.

Sorry, I would have plugged your 236's too, but I haven't heard too much about them after Carlisle. I take it they are working out well and you have the stock/availability now. That's great. You're performing a great service so others don't have to go through the frustration that I experienced a few months back during my search.
