I am restoring my instrument cluster on my 64 and think I am missing something on the ignition switch assembly. The cluster had been apart at some point in the car's past so it is entirely possible something was left out when they put it back together. Is there supposed to be a sleeve-like piece piece behind the cluster housing that holds the switch in place? I have the bezel "nut" that secures it from the front, but it seems like there should also be a sleeve or nut to hold it from the rear too. Does anyone have a picture that shows how the assembly is installed? Thanks.

Re: C2 Ignition switch
Hi Andy, the original switch didn't require a 'sleeve', but the generic ones did. I cut a piece of 1" pvc pipe 1" long for a backing spacer as per an old Armond Filer article about 63/64 ignition switch replacement. It will work until you find an original switch. AC Delco D-1449 is what you need.

Re: C2 Ignition switch
Andy - I'm not aware of anything that fits between the Delco-Remy ignition switch and the back of the cluster housing on the original installation. Is your switch a Delco-Remy switch? The original ignition switch for the 64 is a part number 1116635 which was replaced by 1967 with p/N 1116650. The original Delco switch will have 635 embossed on the step face from the lock cylinder (front) to the switch mechanism (rear) and if it's the 650 replacement it will have 650 embossed on the step face. If the switch is other than a Delco original or the Delco replacement, some adapter might be required. Good luck. Pete- Top

Re: C2 Ignition switch
Andy, your 64 will be different from the 65, the three raised ribs will be similar unless you have an after market 'Napa' switch which doesn't have the ribs. I checked and my 'original' 64 switch was like Peter said with number '635' on the edge. The out side locking ring is chrome. The 64 light socket screws to the back of the instrument panel, not like the 65 assembly switch with built in light hood. Also, carefully read your owners manual for key and ignition switch function, when the key may be removed etc. Let us know which switch you have.

Re: C2 Ignition switch
Thanks everyone for the replies. It looks like I have the replacement style switch. There are no "Delco-Remy" markings, GM format part numbers, and no ribs...but it does work; or did before I took it apart. Do you all know if the key assembly will transfer to either another replacement switch, or if I am lucky enough to find an original?- Top
