Your 692 head is a Flint casting and your 896 could be a Tonawanda casting for L 2 63 or it could be L 26 3 which would be a Flint Casting . If the 896 is a Tonawanda casting, I would suspect that your interference is caused by the raised symbol pad. It looks like it may have been machined some but looks thicker than typical Flint head markings. The 896 head did not enter production until the 62 model year and was used on 250 hp 327's and powerpack 283 engines as well as later 2 bl 283 engines.

My question now is that I have a 59 and 63 head on this engine and I'm wondering if this engine will achieve balanced performance?

I doubt you could notice any difference....same specs.

Question is will dissimilar year heads like this affect a balanced performance?

This is very interesting to me, because I just got new 550 heads shipping to me and I don't know if the head mark is machined. If it turns out my new heads are from Tonawanda and are NOT machined, and I need to have a shop to so -- How much do I have them machine it down? 1/64? 1/32?

Question now is will the engine's performance be the same with two heads with different part numbers?

                  Jim -

Don't know about port sizes (which are likely "small" on both), but both of those heads have 60cc chambers and 1.72"/1.5" valves; they were used on base engines.
