Your 692 head is a Flint casting and your 896 could be a Tonawanda casting for L 2 63 or it could be L 26 3 which would be a Flint Casting . If the 896 is a Tonawanda casting, I would suspect that your interference is caused by the raised symbol pad. It looks like it may have been machined some but looks thicker than typical Flint head markings. The 896 head did not enter production until the 62 model year and was used on 250 hp 327's and powerpack 283 engines as well as later 2 bl 283 engines.
