I am going to replace my carpet in my 71 454 4 speed coupe. Most likely with the Al Knoch set.
I replaced the original carpet in the early eighties from some that I bought from Corvette America, if my memory serves me. When I replaced the original it was made by JP Stevens , at least that is what was under the rear carpet with a small affixed paper tag.
When I removed the drivers and passenger side carpets there was nothing under them, like a underlayment. It was just jute and on top was the carpet. So when I went back with the replacement carpet that is all I did was to put in back down with bare fiberglass in the floor boards. Like I had found it. My question is did the factory leave out a underlayment in my car? What was the original type underlayment in the 70-72 years?
I would like to go back with some type of underlayment to knock down the cabin heat from the big block, I am looking at using a product called Dynamat. That is also why I was looking at the carpet from Mid America with its built in foil backing to keep that exhaust heat out. I know that they make it in different thickness . Has anyone came across a early C-3 car with out the factory underlayment? And just the carpet with the jute?
