    oilpan gaskets

ordered the metal reinforced gaskets from local chevy dealer. what i got , in a GM labeled box reminiscent of a Fel-Pro box, was a one piece BLUE rubber gasket. these won't work on the judging field due to their color. i seem to recall getting a pair of CORK two piece oil pan rail gaskets several years ago but can't recall the source. any thoughts on a source for Cork metal reinforced pan gaskets? thanks, mike

The last available GM oil pan gasket kit for 55-74 small block applications was GM #14079400. This gasket kit was definitely the metal-reinforced cork-type gasket. So, if you can find one of these around, you'll have exactly what you need. I see it's been discontinued and I can't find a new number, but maybe it's been replaced by the one piece with a new part number I'm unaware of.

Otherwise, you could go with a Fel-Pro # OS 5197 C-4. This is the standard, 4 piece gasket set and it's cork. However, I'm not 100% sure it's metal-reinforced. I think it is, but I'm just not sure.

Another possibility is Corteco #16361. This is also a 4 piece gasket set and it's cork. However, it has provisions for a dipstick on BOTH side gaskets---you have to trim off the unused one. Also, I'm not sure that it's metal-reinforced, either. Corteco is the new name for what used to be known as Detroit Gasket.

    Follow-Up:

I checked and there are a fair number of the GM #14079400 in dealer stock. Your local GM dealer ought to be able to locate and obtain a set for you.

400 ci sbc hell. if yer gonna cheat, go big time. i've got about 10# of aluminum grindings on the shop floor. way tougher to make a 502 look like a 283 than it was making a 364 sbc look like a 283. front row seat in cheaters heaven reserved in mikie's name.

Summit must have just about the most efficient order processing, packing, and delivery on planet earth. When I order stuff from them in the morning, I usually get it the next day! Of course, I'm not that far from their Reno-area warehouse but I have things I order from my local area that take a lot longer than a day to get to me.

McMaster-Carr is another supplier (for industrial-type hardware items) that has lightening-fast delivery.

                  Joe,

Couldn't agree more. Summit is super fast. The only thing I do not like is the minimum handling charge of $9.75. I do not have a speed shop locally so everything I get is via the inter-web. I am human and forget things on my initial order and end up paying the 9.75 on a $6.00 cam locking plate. Oh well!

GM #14079398 is for a block with a RIGHT side dipstick. As far as Corvettes go, it's applicable to 1980-85. It's still available from GM.
