Wiper bay and windshield frame questions

    1) I have cleaned up the wiper bay and found tons of what appears to be almost like a roof tar material that has long since shunk up and was quite brittle.

Was this heavy tarish material used as a factory weather seal or did Bubba visit the wiper bay trying to plug leaks?

    2) On the windshield frame and header, I'm trying to figure out what surfaces were black and what were/are color if any.

This is just a guess, but I'm thinking that the black might have ended at the lip along the door pillar and the entire windshield frame inside and out was black.

Oh yeah, satin or gloss black?

    Am I close?

The "tarish material" was used at the factory. Not sure about the black I'm sure others will chime in Mike

You be close Tom. The tar that you found could be factory sealer. These cars are notorious for leaking in the wiper trough. We have used roofing patch to reseal these boxes

          Hi Chuck,
On my 71 the body color came up the hinge pillar on to the windshield post as far as the bracket for the j-nut for the top screw on the dash pads. The factory 'break' seemed to have been down with a 'mask', not tape like I did.
Here's a picture of my wiper-bay black-out too. There was a lot of body color under the black. The rest of the front side of the pillars and header were black. The back sides still showed green chromate with a little black overspray.
          I hope this helps.
          Regards,
          Alan

Thanks Alan, those are great shots.

On the pillars and header, is that a satin or gloss finish? Almost appears to be a satin.

Thanks to all for the input,

            Chuck

              Hi Chuck,
The birdcage got painted with some old green zinc chromate primer I was able to find and then good ol' Krylon # 1613. I found you can pretty much make #1613 as shiny or flat as you want by how you spray it.

So what level of black sheen do you have on the pillars Alan? High gloss?, Medium gloss?, Satin?
