    Valve screw gaskets

Am I the only one that remembers that valve cover gaskets came with valve cover screws rubber gaskets which I've seen on cars and Corvette of the 50's . And may have been original ?? I don't know for sure just a guess! But I use them on my 55 to help keep oil from coming up the screw treads .

I guess you are old friend. I can't say I've ever seen them before (surprise!). I know I always used to use a little Permatex on the screws (and the gaskets) for that purpose, but then most of my V8's had the aluminum covers except for a set of chrome ones I used just like a change of clothes. I also had a 72 SS Nova w/350 which was a great leaker. I used those hold down bars on that one. Interesting.

IF they were ever used in PRODUCTION, I can find no indication that such a part was ever available in SERVICE from GM. They may have been a once-available aftermarket piece, though.

When I was a mechanic in the 60's working for a Chevy dealer the GM gaskets came with them , also for years Fellpro gaskets had them in their sets . They worked and I still use them .It's just a little trivia some old farts might remember !!

Do you mean the GM gasket SETS came with them? That's a possibility because a lot of times gasket SETS came with parts that were not used in PRODUCTION. The exhaust manifold gaskets are a notable example. I think that most GM and aftermarket sets still have these exhaust gaskets. However, I've never seen the rocker cover screw gaskets in sets. That must have ended a long time ago. In any event, if they were supplied with sets, they were never available as separate pieces that I can find.

I worked as a mechanic in a Chevrolet dealer in the 60's too and I've never seen any GM gaskets such as you show in your picture.
In all the years of looking at old GM valve cover gaskets from the 50's and 60's, I've never seen any that also had the small gaskets for the screws.

I definitely DO remember the small gaskets coming in auto parts/aftermarket valve cover packages though.

I had a set of the little retainer gaskets in my tool box until about 3 months ago. I moved them into my misc storage boxes. Might have been Fel-pro if they were in business back then? They came with a set of rubber type valve cover gaskets I bought in the 60's or 70's. Don't remembver ever seeing them in any standard set of rebuild gaskets.

I don't question that, at all. I don't think that doubt regarding the functionality of the gaskets is at all part of this discussion.
