    1960 Engine Code Question

The code on this particular 60 vette stamped on the engine pad is:

    101701 FI202CQ.

The numbers: 101701 are cast raised digits on the steering column plate as well, so I'm sure the engine is original to this Vette.

My question concerns the I2 digits after the digit "F" which means the month of December. Would that be Dec of 1959 or Dec of 1960 for the build date of the car?

    Thanks in advance.

James, 1202 = December 2nd. Cast date of engine indicates the year and it's located on the passenger side of the block rear, under the blow by/crankcase vent tube. Gary....

      Jim -

'60 #1701 was built on or about December 11, 1959 per the "Birthday Book".

If you look for the block casting date as Gary mentioned you will probably see a K for November (or J for October) followed by the date of the month followed by a single digit for the year. You will also see the casting # 3756519.

The CQ on the pad is the 230 HP base engine with a single 4 barrel carm and a manual transmission.

Question: Are the VIN digits uniform, as though stamped in a gang holder, or individually stamped?

            Loren,

Jim sent me a pic. of his pad and the VIN was stamped individually. It fits right in with the info. I've collected on those stamped free-hand.

              Loren,

See pic of VIN. This engine is original to this car. The I2 stands for Dec from my resources. Goat

                  Gary,

Thx. The block date code is L19- Dec 1, 1959. And the casting is 3756519. So, this car has very close date codes with a build date of a few days later.

I like the stamp - what's the block casting date? Is it one that was cast before the strike and assembled after it was over?

                      Loren,

L19 is the block casting date. I don't have any knowledge of the strike; first I have heard. It is interesting that the body build date on the data plate located on the steering column is one day after the casting date of the block. Now John Hinckley said this car was built on or about Dec 11, 1959 according to the "Birthday Book" which I have never headr of.

                        Jim -

The block casting date (L 1 9) is December 1, 1959, and the pad stamp (engine assembly date) is December 2, 1959; that one-day span isn't "typical", but is not unusual either. The VIN puts the car's final assembly date at December 11th (give or take a day or two), so the numbers flow well.

The "Birthday Book" is available at the NCRS on-line store (icon at the top of the page).
