    C1-1961 Base engine

What fitting goes into the threaded hole just below the thermostat housing on a 230 hp '61? If its a plug ,what does it look like? Also does this engine use the oil filler tube with the clip for the carb return spring or the bracket that bolts on with an intake manifold bolt?
    Thanks in advance

The hole is in the intake manifold and the threads are pipe threads. Maybe I wasn't clear about that.

Definitely does NOT have a bracket on the oil fill tube--carb return spring bracket goes on the top of the thermo housing.
The hole below the housing? Small hole? If it's the one I'm thinking of, it uses a plug with a square head. This is also a differentiator between a Tonawanda block and a Flint block, as I recall, with the Flint block having this hole and plug.

        Mike,
Thanks for your reply. The hole in the intake manifold is 1/2" pipe thread. I think you're right about it being a plug, because in all the pictures I can find of those engines there is not a clear view of it but there is no water hose leading to it. I think the small hole you're thiking of is a 1/8" pipe thread and is in the block. Is the carb return spring bracket that attaches to the thermostat housing the same one shown in Noland's book for a '62 base engine application?
        Thanks for your help.

          Richard,
Bracket is like 62 bracket, you are correct.
Sorry I didn't read your post well--you did indicate that the hole is in the intake. That's where the fitting (1/2 NPT) is for the second heater hose. First heater hose is to water pump, second to intake. Top of water pump fitting has hose that goes to expansion tank on left side.

Thanks Mike. I think I'm starting to get this sorted out. I've been working on my car for several years and it wasn't original when I got it! I have the temp. gage sensor on the right side of the intake manifold. The drawings seem to show the heater hose in that location. Maybe the 1/2" pipe thread under the thermostat housing is the correct location for the temp. gage sender. Does that sound right?
            Thanks

On my 62 to the lower left is the temp sending unit,
right front of manifold is the heater hose connection.

The temp sending unit is "under" the thermostat housing, so to speak. I probably would say adjacent to-- the sending unit mounts vertically, with the "button" towards the sky.

On my 62 the temp sending unit is under the thermostat housing but it is at an angle, I would say between 10 & 11 o'clock, the sending unit is one piece so after installation you just slide the temp gauge wire onto the button which is also angled.

                    Richard -

Assuming you have the correct 829 intake manifold, the temp sender goes in the 1/2" NPT hole on the angled surface just below the thermostat housing on the LH (driver's) side. The threaded hole on the RH (passenger) side is for the fitting for the 5/8" heater hose.

                      Thanks guys,
You've confirmed my simple mistake and put me back on the right track. I just had the sender in the wrong place. Does anyone have a discription of the 2 pipe nipples that screw into the manifold and water pump for the 2 heater hoses?
By the way, this board is doing a great job of conserving what little bit of sanity I have left.
                      Cheers,
                      Richard
