Here's an Aug '64 Chev Service News article on how to modify for racing wheels on coupes; by using outer quarter panels (cream colored, as in 1963 MY -- see 2nd pic) which had outer lips shaved [see view C], and inner wheelwell fender caps. These two mods helped tire rub with KO's and the tire size indicated.

Now since the KO's were 6" wide but the same off-set (+0.44") as the 5_1/2" wide steel wheels, I think this means that wider tires would equally extend outwards and in .

There is a REGISTRY of many of the vin numbers, both big tank and small tank. Franz Estereicher knows these cars well. Bill Braun knows them well also.

We can help you if needed.

Small tank 13873 is already listed as Silver / black with Radio and heater and a H4 Build date. You need to talk to the Z0-6 Registry curator, Bob Jones at his Arizona home. Private email me and I will hook you up with numbers.

                  Hi John,

I also have this car listed on my '63 file as being a Silver/Black small tank Z06.
I recorded it's info at one point from someone who claimed to have original paperwork for this car.

                  Hope this helps.

                  Syd

Re: How to verify a Z06

                    John,

This 63 is not listed in the earlier Brooks survey and the closest ZO-6 is several hundred numbers away.

Being listed or not listed in anyone's survey doesn't mean anything but the grouping of ZO-6's is more important. Also, one could have been order at any time during the year and being a small tank this 63 could have been produced without the rarest part.

At this point, I would enlist the help of an experienced individual to inspect the 63.

                    JR

Re: How to verify a Z06

I agree with Joe Ray's suggestion.

Last January, when the economy was much better, a "small tank" ZO-6, complete with all it's parts (original brake shoes, screened backing plates, original master cylinder, original engine and differential and transmission) sold for $125,000 needing restoration. Another $100,000 plus $$ has been spent on the restoration since.

So even thought the economy is crazy today, "real" BIG tank Z0-6'S have reached the $300-400 area and small tank cars are about 30% less.

The market today is not that different for good cars, so if you are really interested in buying this car, I would hire a ZO-6 professional to help you.

NOT TRUE! You have to include the adapter for KO wheel offset, and when you do it's about +0.06 - same as the '67 Rally/bolt-wheels - so the circumferencial centerline of the tire is moved outboard about 0.38".

I just got off the phone with Bob Auxier. I now understand you have more than just curiosity in this car.
