    Broke eazy out

I knew better but kept turning it. Any ideas how to get it out? It is in the adjustable plate the t-top thing with the triangle stud screws into. I don't see any way to get the plate out from behind. Its a 70.

Drill it out and retap the remaining screw hole.

No way you will drill through an easy-out. It's hardened tool steel. I once did this with a tap on an exhaust manifold and tried almost everything. I was lucky I could weld a post in place over top of it.

You might try welding a "handle" onto it. Most likely it will break off but you never know.

Find a Tool and Die shop or a machine shop with a Wire Feed EDM machine. They can burn it out easily.

That is fiberglass around there -- I'm not sure welding will be possible that close to the plastic. If you do try that, be sure to have someone else right there with a fire extinguisher -- lots of water will work well. Good luck.

Is there any way to get the plate out? May be tie a smalll wire to it and let it drop down and out a hole then pull it back up. Is it in a groove or what I know it moves for adjustment but what keeps it from coming out?

You might consider attacking it from the inside, by cutting a small opening in the fiberglass and removing and replacing the entire backing plate. The two backing plates on my 72 were lose and I had to wire tie them in place during the paint operation so it might just pop off?

              Regards,

              Kevin

If I recall, the backing plate comes out easily. One did on a car I was working on, anyway. I'd investigate from behind.

There are easy out extractors available in various sizes. Walton Company West Hartfod, CT 06110.

860-523-5231. Keith, Go to the top of the page and type in Easy Out Extractors. You will be amazed. Good luck, John

The easy out extractor won't work. The thing broke off is a craftsman left handed threaded extractor that tightens up in the hole and grabs. Nowhere for the fingers to go in. If any one knows what holds the plate in. That may help figure if I can get it loose. Anyone maybe parted out one to the point you can see in there? Pics would be nice. Thanks

                      Hi;

I manged to break an ez-out in an engine block a couple of years back. It is hardened steel and will not be drilled. I managed to get it out by using a Dremel tool with one of those "ball" headed bits to CAREFULLY drill a hole in the center of the ez-out and then backing it out with a drill as I recall. I ultimately wound up re-tapping the hole... It is still in service!

                      Hope this helps,

                      Joel

I'm a jeweller so I work on slightly smaller items but scale is not important. I had to use diamond drill-bits to drill through hardened steel. Just be carefull not to over-heat the drill bit.

                            Keith:

I've taken a cut off tool and cut a groove in the top when I've had these problems before. You might be able to coax it out with a screwdriver and a bunch of swearing. If you can tap it when you're turning it it might loosen. If you nick the glass with the wheel it can be touched up.

Where do you get a diamond drill bit and can I afford one?
I put the screw in the lower hole and a bolt where the triangular shaped stud goes to hold it and pecked at it with small punch trying to turn it and no luck.
