    Re: Zl-1 Prototype Block

I'll have to pay Wayne Guinn the money owed for his research before I can see documentation as to why he thinks it may have been in a '66 L-88 test mule for a while....or his stating that it MAY have been in one of the 2 ZL-1 Camaro show cars.

John, I don't know what this is all about, but if you would like to elaborate please e-mail me directly.

BTW You will have to contact me in LATE April because CRS is setting in and I need all the that help I can muster.

          Re: Zl-1 Prototype Block

Thanks for the drawings Clem. I will jump on this train too. I too have one of these engines, a prototype casting (0-321270) with 4.440 bore liners. Block came from Smokey Yunick's shop in the mid 80s. I spoke with Jim Hall and a retired GM engineer and they both confirmed that my block was used in the Can Am racing series. I have been trying to learn more about it for over a year now, even contacting Wayne Guinn. My block has a Feb 1968 cast date. I have recently acquired an NOS set of magnesium valve covers with the oil drain back holes per Clem's drawings. Also have an NOS prototype cast alum front cover with the built in crank-driven oil pump and am looking for a magnesium oil pan.

I am interested in learning more about these rare engines. I could post pics of mine too.............if I knew how.

          Thanks,
          Rex

if you have a scanner with your computer scan the pictures into "my pictures" and then add them to your posts thru "manage attachments" as that is how i do it.

When I get time, I will make you a photo of the valve covers. I have a pair hanging on the wall in my shop

John Davis and Ronald Rains....................you both have emails from me regarding the aluminum prototype blocks.

Thanks in advance for your help.

I'm curious, what was the purpose of the blue plugs in the lifter valley? I would think they provide access to the water jackets, but why from the lifter valley area?

Usually, core plugs have more to do with manufacturing of a block than they do with any subsequent utility. I expect that's the case here.

Clem...not sure about the oil pump, as I just bought the bare block...although it does have a provision for a dry sump (side oiler). John

Clem... Somewhere I have info and prints on the front mounted oil pump. It was actually made from a Turbo 400 transmission front pump.
As I remember, that design was to be used through at least the middle of 1968 on the Can-Am engines.

Just use a digital camera and take a picture. Just as good as a scaner.
