    Attention AOL Users!

I know some of you have had great difficulty getting started using the board with the AOL browser. We have advised you to use any other browser to solve the problem.

After learning a couple new tricks at a webmaster meeting last week, and doing some further research I have found what might be the solution.

Rather than bore you with details I just ask that some of you who had trouble give the AOL Browser another chance and let me know if it will now work as expected.

It seems that only some AOL users were affected so if you are an AOL user and don't know what I am talking about it probably doesn't pertain to you.

    Re: Attention AOL Users!

John, I am one of the AOL users who has to log in each time I sign on the TDB. Problem continues this evening. Gary sent me something about a fix several weeks ago but I lost it. Other than dumping AOL, what is the latest work around?
    Best regards,

The work around that worked for me (and was recommended by John) was to download a free browser called Foxfire. You can get to it through Google (even on AOL) and it gets me through to the DB instantly.

As an old and current AOL user, I do not have this problem. I will point out that there are ways to have the problem or not have it. If you use the "log out" button on the NCRS TDB header, or if you clear your cookie files, AOL will require you to log in at the next time you try to connect.

If you simply close the AOL browser window when you exit the TDB, you will be automatically logged in the next time you access the board. Been doing it for years.

Jim, I have AOL and agree with you 100%. The other day my sister came and cleaned up the PC and I lost my cookies so I had to log on again. I have other issues with AOL but this is not one of them. John D.

                Re: Attention AOL Users!

The problem that I am referring to is the inability to log on at all. Certain AOL users would enter their username and password and click on Log In, and then just be returned to the login page as if nothing happened.

The problem stems from AOL browser caching (storing) the page on the users computer in case they needed to see it again. When they clicked on the log in button it just took them back to the screen that was stored on their computer instead of letting the tech board software do it's magic.

Since this was isolated to only a few AOL users I suspect it may be related to one specific version of the AOL browser.

The fix that I applied doesn't seem to have any negative impact on anyone else so I will leave it in place. Maybe the next new AOL user that tries to create an account and use the Tech Board won't have the problem. If they do I suspect I will hear from them.

Thanks to all for your replies.

                    Re: Attention AOL Users!

I've had AOL for 13 years, and have never had an issue; I NEVER use the "log out" button on this or any other site. When I'm done with a session, I click on the "Forum Tools" item in the blue bar near the top of the index page, then click on the drop-down item that says "mark this forum read", then click on the "X" at the top right corner of the window.

The only time I've ever had to "log in" was when I signed on with a new computer for the first time and didn't have a "cookie" on it yet.

Some AOL users are still on dial up because it is the only access available to them. Other users have high speed now but because they are used to the AOL browser and have all of their contacts in the AOL email it is just easier to continue to use the AOL Browser and Email they are used to.

Question. How dose AOL get HSI to your house if you did't have a fiber optic phone line.Seems it would be easer to go cable or satellite. I live in small town IN. We can't get AOL at all.
