    AC Delco parts repop

I have a question on individuals reproducing parts that they have purchased then changing the part to make it appear like the original. For example taking a new AC Delco filter and printing the label and then painting it black to look like the original assembly line filters . And doing the same with other parts like shocks , redoing new old stock with new wording into the shock body and air filter and so on. My questions since they bought the part, it is still a AC Delco part, just the words have been changed, have they done anything wrong?

As long as it is for their own use only. However, if they try to re-sell it or misrepresent it any other legal way it is fraud, I would suppose.

GM retained the rights to the "AC Delco" service trademarks when they spun off Delphi several years back, so if the "restamper" has the authorization from the GM Restoration Parts group (Basically buying a license and waver of responsibility) then the "rebranding" would be "officially Authorized" by the holder of the trademark. At least that is how I understand the program.

What gets me is when I see a part listed as correct NOS for some year Corvette that is obviously wrong, I'll some times e-mail them explaining it's wrong to save them any bad feed-back. I get back a e-mail telling me it's up to the buyer because the part numbers is in a book that said it is. The point I'm making is they don't care if a new Corvette owner later finds out! That is where people loose 25% of their money learning what is correct and not.

Caviat Emptor! but I agree many eBay descriptions are inaccurate. Best for anyone buying an item to know what they need in the first place. One of the many areas where active participation in NCRS can be an advantage. As Gen. George Patton once said "One look is worth a thousand reports!"

my biggest complaint is the OVERUSE of the term NOS - most NEW OLD STOCK parts are not available more than a year or two (if even that long) after a model's release!!!!!

to be truthful, most of the parts that are listed on eBabe and even in our Driveline as NOS are in fact NORS or New Old Replacement Stock.

Rick, Actually service parts are/were produced when the original cars were built. Depending on demand service parts can and are still available for C-2's & up. If the demand for a part meets GM's criteria it will be produced forever. However, over the years the tooling may wear and the vendor change. An example were C-2 bumpers. The service parts were of such poor quality that most people did not want them, not realizing their car was produced with the same quality bumper. And then you've got the guys that hoard/buy out closed dealers/etc that really do have NOS parts. Sometimes the repops are better quality than OEM and sometimes not. Ken
