This is what I posted some weeks ago about them ,only 55 first design (I) think was used till 58 and the pump having the boss was a repalcement. . But some one may know for sure (I) dont know for sure just a guess.

Roy, I've seen quite a few of the early '4911 pumps on scrap yard passenger cars from '55 and EARLY '56. Plus, the late version of the pump (with upper boss) on 1956 scrap yard cars/trucks. That suggests the change (add the upper boss detail to the basic '4911 casting) DID happen during production run(s) in '56...

Then that would make for a great Article in the drive line , What I've seen over the years as you said 55 and early 56 were the same first design .Your a good junk yard DOG that has experience many dont
