    '72 A/C Mounting Bracket question

    Hello everyone,

I'm working on a '72 L48 automatic with air car and I'm having a problem installing the compressor into the lower mounting bracket for the A/C compressor. The front part of the lower bracket that attaches to the exhaust manifold broke some time ago and the replacement cast bracket I got from a vendor is different from the original. (See photos) For reference the original bracket is GM casting # 3878222.

The problem is the distance between the front mounting hole and the rear mounting hole of the bracket, the original is approx. 6", while the replacement is 5-11/16". So... the compressor will not fit between these points.

Does anyone know where I can get an original bracket, or if any of the vendors sell the correct one. Has anyone else had this problem? All help is greatly appreciated.

GM #3878222 is the correct bracket part number. So, the "reproduction" is not correctly made. I don't understand how the bracket could work for anybody. In any event, you may need to locate a good used bracket from a source like Pacific Corvette, Contemporary Corvette, etc.

Does the reproduction bracket have the 3878222 number on it?

Another possibility is that you have been sent the 77-82 support instead of the one you need.

      Joe,

The repro bracket does not have the number cast into it. I will check tonight what they are. Thank you for the other info you supplied.

        Joe,

Does the reproduction bracket have the 3878222 number on it?

It has a 4 C (or 0) -199-RC on one side and 3'5'C and F4 on the other side.

I'm going to check with the vender I purchased it from to see if the all measure the same. Thank you agian for your help.
