    63 Fan Clutch

I have been trying to find a correct fan clutch from my 63. I need a NON-dated bar type clutch fan manufactured by schwitzer. Does anyone know where one might be located? I have run out of my resources. Any help would be greatly appreciated. My engine is a 327-300hp non-air car.

    Re: 63 Fan Clutch

Why are you specifically looking for a 6-inch, Schwitzer, bar-style clutch? Both the AIM and the JG agree there were two suppliers in 1963 (Schwitzer, bar and Eaton, coil)...

In my experience, finding a decent Schwitzer clutch core is a harder chore than unearthing a used Eaton coil clutch. That may be telling us something about the relative useage of the two and/or the longevity characteristics of the Schwitzer...

Thank you for our repsonse. If I find a coil type made by Eaton, is it true that the face of must be clear zinc vs yellow zinc which started in 64? All of them i have been finding are yellow faced?

        Jeff;

You can usually find a "core" at Carlisle... I have seen them out there but they cost $$$. I think one guy quoted me like $200 + for a unit which needed to be rebuilt.

Jeffery, I see them for sale on ebay all the time. There is currently one for sale in the Store site. Reference Ebay item # 180192308915 . It has been for sale for some time so you might make the seller an offer. I do have two at the moment and one will be for sale as soon as my other comes back from being restored.
          Good luck with your search.

          Cheers,
          Craig

Craig, thank you very much. Do you know why he would have listed for hi-horse power engines. I have reviewed the judging manual and nolans book and can not find anything that related to hi-horse power engines. The judging manual states either the coil or bar type were used. Any thoughts?

            Thanks

No idea. As far as I know they are correct for all applications. Generally the shaft may be a bit thicker for the higher horse engines but the look is all the same. You generally want one that is undated. My current one which is on my car has been judged twice and passed both times and I bought it listed for a high horse car. I think most folks try to use that as a excuse to make a few dollars more. Just make sure the one you buy has plenty of resistance and doesn't completely free spin. Otherwise wait a few months and I will sell you my extra one once my other one is returned.

              Good Luck,
              Craig

Craig: Which level has your car been judged yet Chapter, Regional or National level. It is a coil type or bar type? I am very interested. Thank you

Jeffrey, I have the Schwitzer Bar style and it was judged both Regionally and at a Chapter Meet. Believe me, most judges are amazed to even see the correct fan clutch whether it be a Schwitzer Bar or Eaton. Taking Jack Humphries advise, finding a good Eaton is usually easier and cheaper than these types. As for the high horse listing, I think relating to our cars that is 300HP or higher. As long as the clutch is undated for a 63 or 64 you are good. My current one was dated and I just covered with epoxy and then painted with cast blast paint on the flange to hide. Can't see it. If the price of the one for sale doesn't bother you then it would be fine for your car or mine. I tried to buy that particular one before but ended up finding one a bit cheaper. The worst part is finding someone to restore if needed. The only fellow I know is Fred Olivia and he is a year plus behind.
                  I hope this helps.

                  Craig W.

What unit are you referencing? If it's my fan clutch it's mounted to the car. It looks identical to the one for sale on ebay. Beyond that there is not not much more. When it comes to restoring these cars and having them judged, sometimes all of us go to far more trouble then there worth. Like I said if you want a Schwitzer Bar style buy the one on ebay or continue to wait to find one cheaper or locate an original Eaton style. Maybe email Jack Humphries, lots of times he has parts like these in his stash. I will be home on Saturday if you still need a photo.

                      Cheers,
                      Craig

If you are looking for a '63 fan clutch, talk to Fred Oliva: http://www.gate.net/~foliva/

                          That's where I got mine.

                            Hi Craig
The ebay item you are referring to is not a 63 fan clutch,For 350.00 I have a few of those and I'll sell mine cheaper. It's for a 65 to 67 corvette. I have a couple of the 61 to 63 only fan clutches and fan blades. I hope they are corvette items but I'm not an expert in the 61 to 63 stuff. But the fan clutches has the little bump on it and it could be for a later car but I'm not a expert in those years. I will have to dig deeper in my stuff and see if I have one without the little bump. In the pic the fan blade with the flat rivots and indented fan blade is not correct for the 61 to 63 but the clean fan clutch has the correct fan blade for the 61 to 63. Thanks, Grant

Grant, from my research GM did use the Schwitzer type clutch in 63 as well as 64-67. At least that's what the 63 assembly manual shows. Thanks for the imput.
