    Engine Coating/Painting

I'm going to start rebuilding the engine in my 1963 and was wondering what the best "coverage" I can put on the engine in Chevy Orange.

In addition, when would be the time to get the engine painted...before or after the rebuild. The machining has already been completed.

It will not be a Bloomington car.

    Thanks,

    Jerry

    Jerry,
I use High Temp. Chevy Orange sold at Auto Zone. They sell 2 different shades. I usually buy the darker one. I suggest to paint the motor after assembly. If you have the opportunity to run the motor before you install it in the car, I suggest you do so. Should any leaks or problems emerge, it is a lot easier to fix them. I usually paint my engines after the initial run-in, after all final mechanical adjustments are made.
    I hope this helps.
    Good Luck.
    Marco

      Marco,

Is there a primer I should use? If so, what would you recommend?

      Thanks,

      Jerry

        Jerry,
I like the Chevy orange produced by Duplicolor. The shade is right on, it has resins in it for high temp and oil resistance, good adhesion qualities, does not need a primer, and is not too heavy (solids content) that the texture of the cast iron is hidden. Paint it after assembally, just like the factory.
