    Engine suffix code label

At NCRS LA Chapter judging I was gigged for no engine suffix code label on valve cover. I have 1970 Vette w/454/390hp 4spd. What label should I have and where can I purchase? I don't see them in any parts catalog I look at.

    Thanks,
    Jim

Jim The label would be yellow with balck letters if you are handy with a computer you could make them yourself. Just get some darker yellow labels at a Office supply store and play with the letters till you get it right. I think they were about 2" X 3" 3.5" they would have the same code that is on your block just made it easy for the guys to find the right engine during assembly. This maybe a bad day but there is a member who may respond and help you make one or he may make one for you maybe. If you look at Corvette Central catalog there should be a photo for a mid year suffix label but its is only 2 letters long. Paul 18046

I believe that Patrick Hulst can make them for you.

Jim I posted a copy of what the label should look like. It would not be correct for your car as it is for a 427 390hp 66...? engine. Good luck.

            Hi Jim,
Here's a picture of the label from my 71, 350/270, 4-speed, no a/c car. Although it's not proper for your engine, it will give you an idea of what one of them looked like in that era. I believe there were more than a few variations. Patrick Hulst seems to know quite a lot about these labels.
            Regards,
            Alan

              Nice original label!
Yes, there are variations and trying to track them can be a challenge.

I've replied to Jim via e-mail.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought I read in the judging guide that those labels weren't supposed to be judged because the glue didn't hold over time and most of the labels fell off.

                    Re: Engine suffix code label

I don't have the manual in front of me, but my best recollection is that it says they fall off -- but says nothing about NOT judging them. In fact the score sheets have that label on one line, so when it is missing there are no originality points and thus NO condition points. That requires the Team Leader's initials for the total deduct, and is the most frequent need for that in the early C3 classes. A wise owner will put some kind of label there so that the judges can award 10% of the originality points -- thus condition points can be assessed.

The earlier posts in this thread give you the wherewithal to come up with a better than a fair facsimile of the label.

Originals like Alan's seem to have an almost tan color to them, with sort of a rough-looking paper texture. In my opinion, the paper found on manila envelopes looks really close, so I simpy ran some through my printer and made my own label, which I never lost points for.

I have made the engine suffix labels for years and gave them away. A few years ago I was called over to look at a nice original label a judge found on a 73. It was one I had made but I just said you don't see those labels very often.
