    Noisy C2 Tach Cable

    Hi Guys,

    The tach in my 65 L76 has made noise for some time (after the dash, tach, and ignition system were completely rebuilt in 2001). Finally got around to trying to fix it, but I cannot seem to stop the tach from squeaking despite all my efforts. I've checked the fit, added the graphite lubrciant, even replaced the cable (twice). Does not appear to be any strenuous/abnormal bends on the cable (everything including the routing of the tach cable through the dash is factory stock). Tach still squeaks. Wondering if it could acutally be the tach gauge itself that is squeaking? (Maybe I'll hook up a drill to the tach cable and see...). Any thoughts?

    Thx,
    Dennis

    Check the gear that goes into the side of the distributer.

      Dennis;

      Sounds like you're on the right course. I've never had any squeeks with mine, though the needle bounces and the original cable sheath has a split in it and it won't hold any lubricant but a little grease.

        Dennis, if you had your tach rebuilt, make sure the cable can fully seat in the rear socket. Sometimes when a new head is installed it creates a 'bind' from the cable end now being too long and bottoming out in the rear of the tach. You can pull the cable out and shorten the squared end so it easily seats in the socket again. Try removing about an 1/8 inch if you suspect a binding where the cable enters the tach case. Good luck

          Hi Bill,

          Going thtrough old posts... as I never solved my squeaky tach cable problem. Saw your reply back from Nov 2008. I hope you are well. Question - what would I be looking for in the tach drive gear in the distributor? I know the problem is not in the tach... as I have reomved the cable from the tach, run the car, and the cable still squeaks. I have tried two different cables... both squeak... what in the distributor tach drive shoud I be looking for?

          Thanks,
          Dennis
