    Re: Unrestored 66-67 Alternator

I have a untouched early 1963 alternator that shows evidence of black paint in the area discussed above, the date on this 628 is 2K10

Here's another view of the 67 from a 390 427 delivered to WNY in 1967.

      Thanks for your interest.

        Re: Unrestored 66-67 Alternator

I just dug out this GM photo of a brand new 64 365 HP engine/alternator with a black stator.

I looked at the original stator out of a '66 1100750 alternator that I had rebuilt. Although the the exposed edge was rusty, you could clearly see the black overspray along the sides. I have a unrestored '68 1100750 that I'll be sure to check for black overspray when I take it apart. Right now the exposed edge is rusty.

Thanks Brian. It will be interesting to see if the 68 is painted black also.

              Michael -

              I don't have a photo yet but my 66, #25855 K27 has alternator 1100693, dated
6F13 looks as though the stator is black. It doesn't look like the generator has been out of the car, but I am very close to sending it to Pirkle as the ammeter shows no charging or discharging for that matter. Anyhow, I now know where to look for the 'stator'. I just got this old car ready for winter, I put the hard top on it yesterday and hit the knock offs to snug them up. Supposed to be icy tomorrow in beautiful downtown Rolla, MO.

Wayne, the single red letter is an inspection stamp.A 2 letter black broadcast code (in addition to the inspection stamp)started to appear in the 1967 model year.

Thanks, John -- I notice the '65 TIM&JG makes no mention of the inspection stamp letter; I wonder if judges look for it ?

To Michael et all -- I opened up that '64 alternator (for early T.I.) that I mentioned previously, but, contrary to what I thought I saw before, I can't find any trace of black on the laminations. In fact, I can't see any 'carmel' either [look at corrosion on the laminations' edge by the windings, and the rivets holding the lamination stack together]. But there's something brownish that is on the mating edge of the rear aluminum case .

It's probably the original stator, as the rotor is stamped # 1956963, which I believe is a pre-'65 part.

This example is, IMO, inconclusive, but thought I'd post just the same.
