    Question on replacing A-Arm bushings

I've read through most threads on A-Arm bushing replacement and all referance the need to use some type of press.

Is this really neccessary? It looks like you could simply use (2) sockets to support the bushings on it's side and simply tap them in with a hammer.

My concern is more with the correct alignment of the Control Arm ensuring it's properly aligned perpendicular with the A-Arm.

I'm using reproduction bushings from paragon which don't look absolutely identical to the originals with thicker, narrower O.D. Dimensions of the rubber on the outside end. (if the repops make a differance with install)

Has anybody ever tried this method or am I opening up a can of worms trying it.

Since I didn't see it mentioned I doubt it's a viable option, but it sure does seem possible from the looks of it.

This resto is starting to get expensive and I'd really like to save the $500 van Steel charges.

    Thanks

John, Be Sure Bushing A Arms Are Clean, Can Be Done With Or Without Press, Things Do Get Ugly Without Press. Lubing Outer Bushings Makes It Go Easier. Hope This Helps. Steve

No need for a major $$ outlay

Your local auto machine shop can change these out for a nominal charge. You can do them yourself, but the first time is a learning experience. No need for a press. Burn out the old ones. Clean out the holes (bare metal), freeze the new bushings, use a little white grease --and you should be able to drive them in pretty easily.

I've driven them out quite easily with a air chisel. You can use a air chisel to drive them back in also, just use a blunt end chisel almost like a large punch. Works in minutes.

          John,
As previously stated. freeze them, clean A-arm, Grease and use large dead blow hammer. Do it on a solid surface and support A-arm.

I found the upper ones are simple.
Lower ones are a different story I used a hole saw (no center drill) to remove the old rubber - less smoke. To put back in needed the press and supports (without may bend A arm), however did not "freeze the new bushings" that sounds like a fine idea (DAH).

If you are concerned about judging then get correct rubber, they are available, for a judge will pick that up, although not much of a hit on the points. But if your doing the job why not use correct parts.

Anyone know who sells the best, most correct looking a-arm bushings? Do they also sell front end kit for ball joints, stabilizer bushings, etc? thanks

                Steve,
If you are going to do that much work on the A arms then just get some all done - with rivets and look alike ball joints. Understand from various sources that Corvetteusa.com has these. Will be very close - perhaps a point or two hit, nothing wrong with that! Nobody is perfect today.
