    4656 Reproduction Fuel Pump

    Hi All,

I hope everyone had a great holiday!

I just received a reproduction 4656 fuel pump from Zip Products for my '61. The diaphragm extends about a 1/4" past the housing all around.

Is this the way it should be? Should it be trimmed?

    Thanks in advance.

    Regards,

    Dennis

1/4" extension is correct. That's how, on an original, you can see the wavy lines and know that it is still an original diaphragm.

      Thanks Mike.

It looked strange, but I am glad it's right.

Totally different bottom. Yours is one bolt with a stamped lower cover, 4656 is two screws with a cast lower cover. Apples and oranges.

I have a rebuilt original 4656 pump, and the rivet is steel, rather than copper. I know from some other threads the judges sometimes look for a copper rivet. Is it worth it to switch the rivet, or would the rivet be prone to failure from work hardening? or am I over thinking it?

NOS 4657 pump has the diaphragm sticking out about 1/4" also.

                      Ian -

Rest assured that the rivet is NOT copper - it's copper-plated steel. If it was copper, it'd last about two minutes.

That's what I thought. I was like "Is this GM or Ancient Egypt?" :P
