    1956 Carter Carb Tag Decode

I hope I can sneak in one question here that actually pertains to a '56 Cadillac Carter carb (once I get to work on my 7,300 mile '81, I'll have real Corvette questions).

Assuming the system is the same regardless of the GM make the carb is on, how do you decode the brass tag? Is there a date embedded in it? The top area of this tag shows 2334S, one "box" in the lower area has L5, with a 4 under it.

    Thanks much.

Gary, in the lower left corner, before the date section, what is the "cutout"? Are there different symbols for different WCFB's?

      Thanks!

Those are inspection and may vary in design or amount , repro's don't have them.

Thanks Gary, makes sense. This car was built Dec. 14, 1955, and the carb tag date is L5 (with a 4 underneath), for December '55. I suppose the 4 could mean the 4th of the month?

The tag also has an inspection punch.

            Thanks again.

I "think" that the 4 indicates the assembly line or work station at which the carb was built, line 1, 2, 3, 4, etc.

Here's an early 57 dual quad tag for you to look at. Note the "4" same as yours.

                  Charles,

See if this is any clearer for you.

Jimmy- I see the "4" on yours. I see that Gary's shows an "8". Thanks for the pic.

Re: 1956 Carter Carb Tag Decode

Bob Kuntz informed me that the small digit was the assembly line number and is almost always a 4 or an 8. Another feature that distinguishes originals from MOST reproductions is that originals had a turned under edge to help prevent tearing of the light metal. MOST reproductions are die cut with a corresponding clean cut edge.
