It's taken at the preliminary runs, prior to the actual Daytona Beach events. NASCAR HAD to be there to validate the mph. The car is Engineering ID #6901, the prototype 1956 body mounted on a massaged 1955 chassis. This would be the B-Modified car at Sebring with its 307 cu in engine.- Top

Re: Smokey / France & Duntov 1956
They had been there - when it was being presented as a Styling excercise for acceptance. Probably removed during the conversion to "Let's go racing" trim. The 53 and the 55 that Chevrolet "donated" to the NASCAR attempt to establish the Sports Car Owners and Drivers series on ovals also appeared at Daytona with "side coves" defined by masking tape and no chrome/stainless.
The Daytona Beach cars were updated/changed at Smokey's after the Beach runs, to get over to the rules set by Sebring. A major portion of this would be repainting.- Top
