Who, if anyone, makes a correct brushed aluminum glove box insert for a 66? I have been told that the repro inserts have a slightly different brushed texture. Thanks for any help.

Re: C2 Glove Box Insert
William,
I'd be interested in this too. The two I did in my Restorer story (from the usual vendors), seemed to be more of a satin finish than the brushed aluminum of the original.
They are also much thinner than the originals, a little more than half the thickness of the originals. However, the thickness allows the insert to be slippped in the front, rather than drilling the peened over studs on the back and taking the door apart.
Hope someone has found repro inserts with the brushed aluminum finish.Jerry Fuccillo

Re: C2 Glove Box Insert
Here's one from LICS. It is a brushed finish but doesn't appear to have the exact same texture as originals.

Re: C2 Glove Box Insert
I have used the Long Island Corvette Glove Box Insert on a '66 that we Top Flighted in Jan '07 in Kissimmee. No complaints. In fact many judges
complemented as how nice the GB Door looked.
I would suggest to get a new emblem also. (They have studs with speed nuts and can make installation easier.)
Hope this helps.

Re: C2 Glove Box Insert
Donald,
Here's my original (67) just before I replaced the insert last year:
Here's the same glovebox door after I replaced the insert with one I got from Zip about 10 years ago:
From a straight on picture you really cannot tell the difference in the brushed alumunum finish.
However, if you look at the glove box door on the car in sunlight at an angle from below, you'll see the horizontal aluminum brushing on the repro as well as the original. Admittedly, the horizontal brushing is a little heavier on my original than the repro insert, but if one looks close, the brushed horizontal finish is there on my repro, and I think meets the judging guide.
It's a matter of how far we go with this judging in an assumed perfect and uniform factory world. If you ever have a judging problem with the finish on the insert, have the judge look at the insert at an angle from below in strong light from above. The judge will see the brushed finish, as well as all the hidden scratches and imperfections.Jerry Fuccillo

Re: C2 Glove Box Insert
Hello,
Does ANYONE believe that everything from GM or from the production line was exactly the same from 1964 to 1967???? Or does anyone believe that every glove box was the same for any production year????
Being realistic is part of being a judge or at least I thought it was part of the judging process!
There should be a little latitude when judging the finish of parts especially a brushed aluminum insert for a glove box door.
Get real!

Re: C2 Glove Box Insert
I disassembled the door.
You have to drill and tap the face plate (Don't drill too deep!!) Assemble it with the supplied screws and in the end slightly drill out the screw heads to resemble the look of rivets. (I also experimented with assembly of a door with panel adhesive instead of having to drill into the face plate.) At the end I just barely drilled shallow holes where the screws go and set the already dressed "rivets" (allen screws) into place.
Works well, just don't ask me to take it back appart!!- Top
