    guage cluster removal

I am going to rewire the 67 ragtop and will need to remove the guage cluster to send out to be refurbished. Any publications showing how this is done? I have some shop manuals but they are for 68-82.

    Re: guage cluster removal

If you search the archives I think yoiu will find several posts giving hints and suggestions for the removal of the cluster. It is not difficult but soes take some time.
One suggestion that is worth doing is to remove the drivers seat to allow some room for you to work. Another is to use short legnths of thread all to hold the cluster in place while allowing you some room to disconnect and reconnect the wires.

In addition to the John's articles that David references, I have a copy of this picture handy so I can label connectors as I remove them:

Do you have a better copy of Part 1? This is exactly what I need but can barely read it. THANKS!

Buy the 5 1/4"-20 X 6" bolts suggested in John's article. You cut the heads off then mount them in the cluster screw holes. This allows you to slowly remove the cluster while unplugging and labeling things. Once the cluster is completely unhook, you just pull the cluster off the ends of the bolts and you're done. First break down the rag joint and unscrew the steering column so your cluster will easily come out. Don't forget the oil pressure line actually has oil in it - be ready. All of this is in the article, and it is well worth following.

I didn't cut the head off, but you get the idea!

                Phil,
Sorry, but actually I don't. I had to increase the dpi's when I printed it to read. Play around with your printer and you'll hopefully get a copy good enough to read. Or maybe if John reads he can re-post the original for better clarity.

                      Re: guage cluster removal

I pulled my cluster out in the fall and followed the article by John and everything went smooth. I also used the picture of the back of the cluster that Tim Ehlers mentioned to label each connection. Made the change out of the bulbs and reconnecting everything easier. The clarity of the first article I agee is not too good. Hopefully you can get a readable copy of the first article since Corvette Enthusiast no longer has back copies of those. Good luck.

PS - I believe John had another suggestion to stack phone books on the floor board to make the floor level while you are working on your back below the dash. I wish I thought of that when I did mine.

Now that's a nice hint.....I'm going to be re-installing mine soon and never thought of that. What a great suggestion. Thanks

When I did the cluster and rewiring in my 65 several years ago, I removed the drivers seat, placed nice cushions to rest my back on and used small florecsent bulbs so I could see without burning myself. I hope this one goes as well!
