    oops overfilled my oil --any harm

    I overfilled my oil by about 1/2 a qt. (1988 vette.) Dont ask me to take out pil pan plug and drain some as it is limping and I do not want to touch it for fear of making matters worse . will excess oil burn out,leak out or otherwise disappear. thanks

    Don A 1/2 Qt. Should Be A Problem, It However Would Burn Out Unless The Cars Using Oil, Leak Out - No Unless The Engine Has Leaks.

      I see no issue. Back in my "hot-rod" days, I typically ran an extra quart over full to ensure no oil supply problems at high RPMs.

      If you were to grossly overfill and get into the crank throws, it can aerate the oil and cause issues. But I don't think 1/2 QT over full will do any harm in your car.

      If you can't sleep, remove the oil filter and empty it. Then re-install.

        Don;

        Not a problem as long as it's not too much. It's not an exact science. We always compare the amount in the pan to that which is recommended, but there is more sitting on the heads, in the lifter valley, in the filter, and in other parts of the engine. So there is always a little extra in the engine anyway.

          I don't know what you mean by oil plug "limping", but I would probably loose more sleep over that than 1/2 quart extra oil. My .02.

            I overfilled mine on the last oil change by about the same amount. I just wasn't used to using gallon jugs (Rottela T). With the 5 quart pan and oil filter, it's hard to judge whether to use half of the next jug or not NOT!
            That oil filter can on a 63 doesn't hold a full quart.

            Anyway, my pan plug is a self tapper so I don't like to mess with it much. I did, however, drain out some, but not enough so it still shows a little over full. I'm an old man so I ain't going back under again! I thought it would burn the excess off, but NO, not that 15w x 40. What I have noticed is a little oil sitting at the joint between my intake and the head at the exhaust cross over passage after each drive. I guess it is working it's way up the manifold bolt threads as I once loosened them there to see if I could insert a blockoff plate easily. I don't want to break the original manifold seal just yet.
