That sounds right, when it is hot it should open about a third but when you give it gas it should fully open.

Check fuel for water, get a good fuel sample, water goes to bottom, heavier than gas. Steve

It may be fuel related but I have had coils go bad when heated up. I wouldn't rule out a bad coil. Good luck.

the chances of it being a float problem isnt likely, if this problem justed arrived float levels dont drop as a rule, check out the road test first , the more likely problem could be fuel related, filter, pump, fuel line rubber hose clasped ,fuel tank screen on end of sender.
I agree with Edward. Could be any one of a number of problems but it sounds like a fuel supply problem to me.
It has to be something that may have gotten worse as the miles add up so float level in the bowl, timing etc would have been a problem immediately, not 140 miles down the road.
Check the fuel filter in the carburetor first. Then look into fuel pressure/volume from the fuel pump. (one pint in 30-45 seconds, if I remember correctly)
Stone filters in Holley carburetors DO plug and cause this exact problem, even though they may appear to be clean.

It was a warm day here in So Cal (high 80s). When I would hit an uphill grade the car started loosing power. The more I pressed on the gas, the more it started to miss and even back fire thru the carb (orig 3310 vac sec). My first thought (after it completely died) was vapor lock. Pulled over, took off air cleaner and checked squirters which pumped 2 nice shots! No vapor lock, and no fuel pump problem obviously. Restarted car and limped up hill and it ran great going down hill and on level ground. Up the next hill and started missing again. I was able to limp it home going slow up the hills and fast down and on level ground. My next thought was secondary ignition. Checked plugs, dwell, and timing (10 deg @ idle 36 at full advance). I have packard wires on the car. ANy ideas?
Did the first 140 miles of your trip involve any uphill driving?

If fuel delivery is not the problem have the coil checked.

                Re: 67 327 Problem

Update on my problem. Wired open the heat riser and drove the car to Pomona swap meet sunday. 205 miles round trip. Involved numerous hill climbs up and down the 14 fwy and the 210 in So Cal. On my way back within about 100 yard of where it acted up Friday it started doing the same thing! Limped to the top of the hill and then drove the rest of the way home (about 40 miles). Funny thing is there were much steeper hills in other parts of the drive! had a half a tank this time. One thing that was the same was outside temp. Mid 80s. Car usually runs in the 170 range on the temp gage but both times when I had the problem it was at about 190. i do not know if the gage is acurate. I will check with my infared reader next time it is warmed up. Should I test the possible filter issue by just removing it? or should I just find a replacement?

                  John,

I would expect the original style stone filter would be available at just about any GM dealer as this same filter was used in many GM cars over the decades.

That would be the first thing that I would do. Most likely the easiest and cheapest too.

Got home and went out and removed the "stone" filter out of the carb and I believe this is the problem. The amount of crap/junk caught up in there is unbelievable. I will get a new one in there and see what happens.

John - I am jealous of you. I miss my secular Sundays at Pomona. Sitting in line waiting for the gates to open and getting intoxicated on the pre-emissions control emissions, toasting the sunrise with a surepticious brew, checking out the fine machines on display and cruising the parts aisles. I hope you get to the bottom of your performance issue. I've got to work on getting back to Pomona.

                      Cheers

If I was you I would buy two. Drive it for a while and change it again, if there is that much stuff in it. Be careful starting that nut on the fuel line. Dale
